ErP 2026: Stricter effi­ciency require­ments

By intro­ducing ErP 2026, the Euro­pean Union is signif­i­cantly tight­ening the require­ments for fans. New effi­ciency limits, modi­fied measure­ment methods, a clear defi­n­i­tion of the fan along with expanded docu­men­ta­tion and manu­fac­turer oblig­a­tions are funda­men­tally changing the design, eval­u­a­tion and respon­si­bility in venti­lation tech­nology. ebm-papst is preparing its port­folio for the new require­ments at an early stage and is supporting customers in making the regu­la­tory changeover safe and predictable from a tech­nical point of view.»

RadiPac M: Higher effi­ciency thanks to high-perfor­­mance metal impeller

New possi­bil­i­ties in the design and manu­fac­ture of EC centrifugal fans enabled the devel­op­ment of the third gener­a­tion of high-perfor­­mance impellers. Their three-dimen­­sion­ally shaped blades are char­ac­ter­ized by high strength and improved effi­ciency. The high-perfor­­mance fans with metal impellers comply with strict fire safety regu­la­tions in North America and Asia, and are partic­u­larly suit­able for use in air handling units, preci­sion air-condi­­tioning units, elec­tronics cooling, cooling towers and many other refrig­er­a­tion and air condi­tioning appli­ca­tions.»

Power fans for elec­tronics cooling

With the rapid advance­ment of gener­a­tive AI and data-driven systems, the demands on elec­tronics cooling are steadily increasing. Ever more powerful compo­nents must be cooled reli­ably and quietly within confined spaces, whether in telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions, automa­tion, or IT infra­struc­ture. Conven­tional fan solu­tions are reaching their limits. Oper­a­tion Energy Saving: Foun­da­tion modern­izes AHUs in hospi­tals

According to the German Hospital Feder­a­tion, one hospital bed consumes as much energy per year as three single-family homes. Given their high energy require­ments, hospi­tals there­fore play a key role in climate protec­tion. Energy savings also mean cost savings – a huge cost lever for many German hospi­tals in an already chal­lenging economic situ­a­tion. St. Franziskus-Stiftung Münster (the Münster-based St Francis Foun­da­tion) aims to take advan­tage of this lever for its 14 hospi­tals.»

EMC at air/water heat pumps: Do not disturb!

The Euro­pean EMC Direc­tive (2014/30/EU) defines elec­tro­mag­netic compat­i­bility as “the ability of equip­ment to func­tion satis­fac­to­rily in its elec­tro­mag­netic envi­ron­ment without intro­ducing intol­er­able elec­tro­mag­netic distur­bances. ” It applies to all elec­tricity-consuming appa­ratus, including air/water heat pumps, which are today increas­ingly popular as an envi­ron­men­tally friendly heating solu­tion. This means that both the compo­nents used in the heat pumps – such as fans – and the appa­ratus as a whole may only generate a certain level of elec­tro­mag­netic distur­bance and may itself only be influ­enced by a certain level of such distur­bance. The levels are defined in stan­dards, compli­ance with which must be ensured by heat pump manu­fac­turers. Well-equipped EMC test labo­ra­to­ries combined with engi­neering exper­tise are a prereq­ui­site for this.»

No heat-induced down­times at the Witznitz Energy Park 

At Germany’s largest solar park, 207 trans­former stations ensure that the power gener­ated has the right voltage to be fed into the power grid. However, heat can damage the trans­former compo­nents, with the result that they need to be replaced sooner. The trans­former stations are cooled with 207 RadiCal centrifugal fans from ebm-papst to ensure their reli­able oper­a­tion – even at times when the sun gener­ates a lot of power.»

Fans used in venti­lation: Detecting and avoiding reso­nances

Fans used in venti­lation, refrig­er­a­tion and air condi­tioning systems or other indus­trial appli­ca­tions are gener­ally subjected to rigorous testing. But in prac­tice, fail­ures often occur after a short time. The cause is usually vibra­tions resulting from the way the fans are installed. The reso­nance char­ac­ter­is­tics of a fan must there­fore be tested during oper­a­tion and in inter­ac­tion with the surround­ings in order to take measures if neces­sary.»

Opti­mizing resi­den­tial air condi­tioning with simu­la­tion

Fans are flow machines. Fans opti­mized according to aero­dy­namic criteria reli­ably deliver the desired air flows at the rele­vant oper­ating point and are energy-effi­­cient and quiet in oper­a­tion. But the instal­la­tion situ­a­tion also plays an impor­tant role. A fan installed in the appli­ca­tion is often not as quiet as hoped or less effi­cient than the spec­i­fi­ca­tions in the data sheet, because inter­ac­tions between the fan and the customer device have an impact on the flow vari­ables. Simu­la­tion can help here. the behavior of a fan in the specific appli­ca­tion can be precisely calcu­lated and visu­al­ized with CFD (Compu­ta­tional Fluid Dynamics, i.e. numer­ical fluid mechanics).»

On the safe side with FanGrid: Retrofit of a hall venti­lation system

Thanks to past energy improve­ment measures, the venti­lation system in the produc­tion building of a well-known compo­nent manu­fac­turer already complied with tech­nical stan­dards. Never­the­less, the building and facil­i­ties manager asked the special­ists at AIRnorm GmbH to take a look. Not only did they discover poten­tial energy savings of around 30 percent; one comment about system avail­ability trig­gered alarm bells for the customer.»

Safety first, not just for air/water heat pumps

Today’s heating systems require concepts based on renew­able ener­gies. Heat pumps are there­fore becoming ever more popular in both new build­ings and reno­va­tions and are subsi­dized by funding in many cases. Air/water heat pumps are widely used due to their effi­ciency and ease of set-up and instal­la­tion. They use thermal energy from the ambient air and transfer it to the hot water circuit via an inter­me­diate circuit with refrig­erant.»
