Compact fans for the tech­nolo­gies of the future

The digital world is devel­oping at a fast pace. Commu­ni­ca­tions tech­nology, data centers, as well as tech­nolo­gies such as indoor farming all need ever more powerful elec­tronics to process enor­mous data flows. At the same time, packing density is rising inex­orably. This makes cooling a chal­lenge. Now a new compact fan is opening up inter­esting possi­bil­i­ties; with an edge dimen­sion of only 10 cm, it delivers up to well over 500 m³ of air per hour.»

New wind for decen­tral­ized resi­den­tial venti­lation

In building tech­nology, demand for decen­tral­ized resi­den­tial venti­lation systems is increasing with growing envi­ron­mental protec­tion and energy effi­ciency require­ments. The devices installed in the façade are not only suit­able for reno­va­tion work, but are also gaining impor­tance in new build­ings. For push-pull appli­ca­tions, there are now new, energy-effi­­cient fans that impress with their high effi­ciency, pleasant oper­ating noise and compact dimen­sions.»

Auto­matic reso­nance detec­tion for more oper­a­tional reli­a­bility

Today, centrifugal fans are used in a wide range of appli­ca­tions. Depending on where they are installed, reso­nances with increased vibra­tion veloc­i­ties may occur in unfore­seen speed ranges. If the fan is often oper­ated in such crit­ical ranges, the drive motors’ bearing system may be damaged, leading to prema­ture fan failure. Although these vibra­tions are measur­able for the system oper­ator, it is not easy to stop them. Auto­matic reso­nance detec­tion provides a remedy. It avoids oper­a­tion at crit­ical speeds, which increases the service life and oper­a­tional reli­a­bility of the fans»

F-Gas Regu­la­tion: Fans meet the chal­lenge

According to the so-called F-Gas Regu­la­tion, emis­sions of fluo­ri­nated green­house gases (F-gases) in the EU are to be signif­i­cantly reduced by 2030. It is there­fore essen­tial to switch to natural refrig­er­ants with a low global warming poten­tial (GWP). However, these are often flam­mable. This means that all compo­nents installed in heat pumps, for example, must meet the stan­dards for flam­mable refrig­er­ants. This also applies to the fans used, but these also need to be as quiet and energy-effi­­cient as possible.»

Plug & play axial fans for appli­ca­tions with high back pres­sure

Axial fans are normally used for situ­a­tions when strong air flow with rela­tively low back pres­sure is required. That is why they have not yet been the fan of choice for devices that require a high pres­sure increase. But now that has all changed: ebm-papst’s new axial fans are also suit­able for appli­ca­tions with high back pres­sure, meaning that these types of appli­ca­tions can also benefit from their higher air flow rates.»

AHUs: The issue of effi­ciency

Deciding which fan is the most effi­cient, and works at the maximum energy effi­ciency, is not that simple: Fans are complex flow machines that react to every change, including instal­la­tion condi­tions, speed vari­a­tions or pres­sure ratio changes due to filter cont­a­m­i­na­tion. As a result, no fan works at the “best effi­ciency” at all times and in all places. Having said that, centrifugal fans are the better choice for most appli­ca­tions in AHUs.»

Increasing fan effi­ciency

The Euro­pean Union’s Ecode­sign Direc­tive (ErP Direc­tive), is the basis for assessing the effi­ciency of various compo­nents and devices. For example, the minimum effi­ciency of fans is spec­i­fied in the fan regu­la­tion, Regu­la­tion (EU) No. 327/2011, which also considers fans that are built into refrig­er­a­tion, air condi­tioning and venti­lation equip­ment. Such equip­ment can only be granted a CE marking if its fans satisfy the fan regulation’s require­ments.»
