What The Tech: What are compact fans and what is their advan­tage?

When space is limited, there is often no other solu­tion: A compact fan that takes up little space and still delivers the neces­sary perfor­mance is needed.


Compact fans come in various forms: axial compact fans, diag­onal compact fans and centrifugal fans.

Axial compact fans often comes into play in control cabi­nets for IT infra­struc­ture. These cabi­nets have limited space, but also require high cooling capacity. Air flows through the axial fans in parallel to the axis of rota­tion.

Diag­onal compact fans are similar, but they achieve supe­rior air perfor­mance with a signif­i­cantly higher pres­sure increase and less noise. Diag­onal compact fans are used for elec­tronics with high avail­ability require­ments, for example in impor­tant data centers where an increasing demand for power for ICT appli­ca­tions due to the new 5G commu­ni­ca­tion stan­dard, autonomous driving or arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence makes them neces­sary.

Centrifugal fans are also avail­able in a compact version. In the case of the centrifugal fan, the air flows through the fan at a specific angle. This enables them to generate more pres­sure than other designs. They operate extremely effi­ciently in confined spaces while consuming very little power. This is why they are often used in commer­cial house­hold appli­ances such as extractor hoods, as well as in breathing equip­ment and smaller indus­trial vacuum lifters.

All three types of compact fans mentioned are partic­u­larly noted for their dura­bility and effi­ciency.
