After all, instal\u00adla\u00adtion space always tends to be at a premium. Energy effi\u00adciency is also an impor\u00adtant aspect, not least because of the need to meet the minimum require\u00adments set down by the Ecode\u00adsign regu\u00adla\u00adtion, which came into force for fans in 2015. Modern fans featuring energy-saving EC tech\u00adnology have plenty to offer in this respect: The compact fans do not just satisfy currently applic\u00adable and future require\u00adments, they already clearly surpass them. Such an arrange\u00adment takes up a lot of space inside the air condi\u00adtioning device and makes instal\u00adla\u00adtion compli\u00adcated. The number of wearing parts also creates addi\u00adtional service work in the course of oper\u00ada\u00adtion. What\u2019s more, this widely used concept is not ideal in terms of hygiene, as belt abra\u00adsion can have a detri\u00admental effect on the air quality. Another draw\u00adback to this constel\u00adla\u00adtion is that it is diffi\u00adcult to satisfy the demands for optimum util\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion of the primary energy supplied. In addi\u00adtion, the effi\u00adciency of asyn\u00adchro\u00adnous drives leaves some\u00adthing to be desired, with a level of between 20% and 70% depending on the shaft power. Speed control \u2013 for demand-based power adjust\u00adment or noise reduc\u00adtion for example \u2013 can only be imple\u00admented with the use of addi\u00adtional compo\u00adnents such as frequency converters.<\/p>\n<h2>Direct-drive EC fans<\/h2>\n<p>Given these factors, direct-drive EC fans are an excel\u00adlent alter\u00adna\u00adtive. EC motors exhibit the same char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics as DC motors, can be just as easily regu\u00adlated and attain effi\u00adciency levels of up to 90%. As well as making better use of the primary energy, another advan\u00adtage is a reduc\u00adtion in heat loss during oper\u00ada\u00adtion which has a posi\u00adtive effect on the service life of the ball bear\u00adings employed. A further argu\u00adment in favour of using EC fans in venti\u00adlation and air condi\u00adtioning devices is their compact external rotor design. The elec\u00adtron\u00adi\u00adcally commu\u00adtated motor is inte\u00adgrated directly into the impeller, thus signif\u00adi\u00adcantly reducing the instal\u00adla\u00adtion dimen\u00adsions (Figure 1). There is no need for a belt drive between motor and fan or a frequency converter. Thanks to EC tech\u00adnology, new air condi\u00adtioning devices are more compact and so require less space at the instal\u00adla\u00adtion loca\u00adtion. It is however possible to put the energy-saving tech\u00adnology to good use in existing designs as well. Depending on the size, this is suit\u00adable for air perfor\u00admance levels of up to 10,000 m\u00b3\/h (Figure 3). Thanks to the high-perfor\u00admance EC drives, these centrifugal fans operate with a high degree of effi\u00adciency in combi\u00adna\u00adtion with a high static pres\u00adsure. The aero\u00addy\u00adnam\u00adi\u00adcally opti\u00admised blade channel of the high-perfor\u00admance impeller and the ideally adapted scroll housing play an impor\u00adtant part in this respect. The overall effect is a reduc\u00adtion in energy consump\u00adtion. Prac\u00adtical tests have proven that savings of more than 40% are possible as compared to a conven\u00adtional cylin\u00addrical rotor AC fan with the same air perfor\u00admance. The fans are also extremely quiet-running thanks to the low-noise commu\u00adta\u00adtion and dynamic balancing of the impeller rotor unit. To do so, the fans convey the air through the heat exchanger and then through the intake and exhaust air ducts. Compact, energy-effi\u00adcient EC fans with speed control are ideal for this purpose, partic\u00adu\u00adlarly in view of the strin\u00adgent energy conser\u00adva\u00adtion regu\u00adla\u00adtions applic\u00adable in this field. This simi\u00adlarly applies to central air handling units (Figure 4b), where the fans have to convey the air through filters, heat exchangers or humid\u00adi\u00adfiers and dehu\u00admid\u00adi\u00adfiers as well as branched duct systems whilst providing compen\u00adsa\u00adtion for any loss of pres\u00adsure. At the same time, the system must be as space-saving as possible and ensure simple, demand-based venti\u00adlation for a large number of rooms. Fans do however also have to satisfy similar require\u00adments in indus\u00adtrial appli\u00adca\u00adtions, for gener\u00adator cooling for instance (Figure 4c). In this case the fan forces the ambient air through narrow ducts at the gener\u00adator \u2013 which is where the new centrifugal fans really come into their own: Thanks to the inte\u00adgrated speed control, cooling can be constantly adapted to suit load and heat gener\u00ada\u00adtion. Vari\u00adable foot posi\u00adtions are possible for the size range 250 to 400 and the fans can also be supplied without a flange. Sizes 310, 355 and 400 are avail\u00adable in the successful cube design. The emphasis was also placed on flex\u00adi\u00adbility with regard to elec\u00adtrical connec\u00adtion. For example the elec\u00adtronics with connec\u00adtion area (Figure 5) can be fitted on the right or left of the housing; the user can then turn the connec\u00adtion area itself to the desired posi\u00adtion. The fans are supplied as a complete unit in a housing and wired ready for connec\u00adtion, thus providing customers with a prac\u00adtical Plug &amp; Play package for their air condi\u00adtioning appli\u00adca\u00adtions. Being designed for different power supplies and oper\u00ada\u00adtion in 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems, the fans are suit\u00adable for use throughout the world.
