Mr. Sturm, you can look back on 50 years of pros\u00adperity. What is the secret of ebm-papst\u2019s success?<\/h3>\n

Our constant efforts to keep moving forward \u2013 both with regard to the company and our prod\u00aducts. Ever since I founded ebm together with Heinz Ziehl, our company philos\u00adophy has always remained the same: Every new product must be ecolog\u00adi\u00adcally and conom\u00adi\u00adcally supe\u00adrior to its prede\u00adcessor. And so we would never dream of resting on our laurels. On the contrary, we should be looking ahead to the next 50 years. We will only be able to main\u00adtain our current rate of growth if we continue to develop new, highly inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive prod\u00aducts.<\/p>\n

What does that mean in concrete terms?<\/h3>\n

Looking back on 50 years of pros\u00adperity \u2013 and into the future: Company founder Gerhard Sturm<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

The whole area of system solu\u00adtions has gained tremen\u00addously in signif\u00adi\u00adcance for us. After acquiring the specialist gear company Zeit\u00adlauf, our plant in St.\u2009Georgen is now in a posi\u00adtion to provide complete drive systems including gear units and control elec\u00adtronics. This means we are able to compete with low-cost manu\u00adfac\u00adturers in the Far East. In Land\u00adshut we are seeing clear signs of a similar devel\u00adop\u00adment towards system solu\u00adtions including gas valve tech\u00adnology and elec\u00adtronics. We must however also consider the possi\u00adbility of offering system solu\u00adtions for customers above and beyond our regular product port\u00adfolio. Not just from the point of view of the added value, but also to guar\u00adantee the use of our prod\u00aducts. If we were to provide control techno\u00adlogy for other compo\u00adnents as well \u2013 for example in the refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion compressor sector \u2013 we could consid\u00ader\u00adably expand our elec\u00adtronics produc\u00adtion. We should however also bear in mind large fans for indus\u00adtrial appli\u00adca\u00adtions like those we are already manu\u00adfac\u00adturing in Hollen\u00adbach. Or fans and motors required to satisfy highly specific demands \u2013 for instance in explo\u00adsion-proof devices as used nowa\u00addays in the petro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcals industry. The main thing is to broaden our hori\u00adzons whilst at the same time main\u00adtaining close contact with our customers.<\/p>\n

Allow me to use the following image to explain my idea: I see ebm-papst as a large tanker in the midst of a group of smaller, more manoeu\u00advrable ships and boats. All are largely free to travel the seven seas and dock at all the world\u2019s harbours. But: All the ships and boats regu\u00adlarly come back to the ebm-papst mother ship to report on their jour\u00adneys and plans and present the results of their work. Experts call this divi\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion. This devel\u00adop\u00adment has been coming for years. And since every ship needs a captain and a crew, there are plenty of oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for moti\u00advated employees to climb up the ladder.<\/p>\n

On which inter\u00adna\u00adtional markets will ebm-papst be inten\u00adsi\u00adfying its activ\u00adi\u00adties in the future?<\/h3>\n

We are still working on getting ourselves estab\u00adlished in the USA. The trend towards energy saving has been a help \u2013 as it enabled us to diver\u00adsify into various sectors. One new outlet is the market for preci\u00adsion climate control tech\u00adnology in data centres. Prod\u00aducts from St.\u2009Georgen have already achieved some initial, albeit modest success in the Amer\u00adican auto\u00admo\u00adtive industry. The major obstacle to resounding success in the USA over the past 30 years has been the dollar exchange rate. Compe\u00adti\u00adtion in China is fierce, but we are never\u00adthe\u00adless aiming to achieve substan\u00adtial growth by tailoring our busi\u00adness to the demands of the market. For example our new, ultra-modern devel\u00adop\u00adment centre in Shanghai will help us react even better to the require\u00adments of local compa\u00adnies in future. We are equally convinced of the poten\u00adtial offered by the Indian market and have invested in a new, high-perfor\u00admance factory in Chennai to enable us to supply Asian coun\u00adtries even more effi\u00adciently. A deci\u00adsion which to this day has proven its worth. So I am expecting ebm-papst to carry on growing in India as well.<\/p>\n

All-in-all that sounds as if there are plenty more chal\u00adlenges waiting for ebm-papst.<\/h3>\n

That is true, but I don\u2019t have any worries about ebm-papst! The chal\u00adlenges we are currently facing are nothing other than normal growth prob\u00adlems. We just need to do our home\u00adwork. Let\u2019s not forget that we are already in an excel\u00adlent posi\u00adtion throughout. In future success will not neces\u00adsarily depend on having \u201cbetter\u201d prod\u00aducts, it will be a matter of getting on the market first. And to do that, a company needs a highly moti\u00advated team prepared to go through thick and thin. We need total commit\u00adment to success! Our outstanding work\u00adforce is our most valu\u00adable asset. ebm-papst remains a family busi\u00adness and that is how we intend to keep it. The posi\u00adtive spirit of the early days still lives on. When all said and done, there is no law which says that anonymity has to increase with the size of a company and that the human aspect has to suffer. I am pleased to see the current manage\u00adment upholding the spirit of the ebm-papst family. After all it makes good sense: What is good for the company is good for its employees.<\/p>\n
