Listening to music on the go or streaming TV shows from the couch, quickly ordering a new pair of pants, chat\u00adting with a friend over\u00adseas \u2014 the digital world makes it all possible. And it all seems to happen invis\u00adibly and imma\u00adte\u00adri\u00adally. However, nothing could be further from the truth: Every piece of infor\u00adma\u00adtion relies on tangible infra\u00adstruc\u00adture, trav\u00adeling as data packets made of elec\u00adtrons and photons through fiber-optic cables from A to B. The back\u00adbone of our digital lives consists of densely packed undersea cables stretching for millions of kilo\u00adme\u00adters, as well as count\u00adless receiving and relay stations on land. If some\u00adthing goes wrong there, it leads to delays, data loss, or \u2014 in the worst case \u2014 a network outage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the Internet has an address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most of the time, these are very unas\u00adsuming, container-like build\u00adings. They house and protect the sensi\u00adtive tech\u00adnology that enables our daily use of the Internet. Take, for example, cable landing stations \u2014 the true hubs of the internet: This is where the optical signals from a subma\u00adrine cable are trans\u00adferred to the terres\u00adtrial network. Or inline ampli\u00adfiers, which boost the signal approx\u00adi\u00admately every 70 kilo\u00adme\u00adters along fiber optic routes. Or small fiber exchange cabins, like the one on the beau\u00adtiful Irish island of Arran\u00admore. The small cabin, which measures just a few square meters, houses complex tech\u00adnology that bundles fiber-optic cables, trans\u00admits data traffic and moni\u00adtors it \u2014 gener\u00adating a lot of heat in the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
