Every second counts in early fire detec\u00adtion \u2013 whether in data centers, museums, or logis\u00adtics ware\u00adhouses. If a fire breaks out in these settings, the stakes are high. Flames, soot, and fire suppres\u00adsants can destroy crit\u00adical data, works of art, and goods \u2013 and in the worst-case scenario, risk human lives. The aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors in Securiton\u2019s SecuriSmoke ASD 2000 product family help prevent this: They detect the start of a fire imme\u00addi\u00adately, based on the very first smoke parti\u00adcles. \u201cTo do this, our aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors contin\u00adu\u00adously draw in air through a network of pipes up to 700 meters long,\u201d explains Hakan Sahin, hard\u00adware devel\u00adop\u00adment engi\u00adneer and system archi\u00adtect at Securiton. The Switzer\u00adland-based company develops compre\u00adhen\u00adsive and inte\u00adgrated secu\u00adrity solu\u00adtions. Active early fire detec\u00adtion is one of its core busi\u00adness areas. \u201cUnlike passive smoke detec\u00adtors, aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors don\u2019t just detect smoke once it has risen to the ceiling. They actively draw air from the surrounding area, enabling them to detect fires early and across large areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light makes smoke visible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But how does an aspi\u00adrating smoke detector reli\u00adably detect whether there is smoke in the air? To do this, every aspi\u00adrating smoke detector contains a sensor that oper\u00adates on the prin\u00adciple of scat\u00adtered light: The aspi\u00adrated air flows through a measure\u00adment chamber where light strikes the parti\u00adcles it contains. Smoke parti\u00adcles alter the light scat\u00adtering in a specific way, and the sensor detects this. The upstream internal centrifugal sepa\u00adrator filter (CS filter) sepa\u00adrates larger dust parti\u00adcles from smaller smoke parti\u00adcles, ensuring that only the smaller parti\u00adcles enter the measuring chamber. \u201cThis is how our aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors reli\u00adably detect smoke and prevent unwanted false alarms,\u201d adds Hakan Sahin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right device for every space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Securiton\u2019s aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors monitor the air in a wide variety of appli\u00adca\u00adtions, from server rooms to large ware\u00adhouses. That\u2019s why the SecuriSmoke ASD 2000 product family consists of three models. \u201cOur ASD 2001 is designed for smaller areas up to 3,000 square meters and oper\u00adates with one duct connec\u00adtion and one smoke sensor. The ASD 2002 uses two duct connec\u00adtions and two inde\u00adpen\u00addent smoke sensors. And the ASD 2004 features four duct connec\u00adtions, with two of them leading to each of the two smoke sensors. This allows for the moni\u00adtoring of signif\u00adi\u00adcantly larger or parti\u00adtioned areas of up to 5,760 square meters,\u201d says Hakan Sahin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion, the aspi\u00adrating smoke detector contin\u00adu\u00adously moni\u00adtors the airflow in the duct network. Securiton uses ultra\u00adsonic sensors for this purpose. A change in airflow may indi\u00adcate a malfunc\u00adtion in the duct system, such as a duct rupture or a clogged intake opening. As a result, the system not only detects smoke parti\u00adcles but also moni\u00adtors the condi\u00adtion of the duct network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing works without a fan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the aspi\u00adrating smoke detector to work, it needs one more key compo\u00adnent. Hakan Sahin explains: \u201cThe heart of the system is the fan. It draws in air and chan\u00adnels it through the duct\u00adwork to the smoke sensor. This is what makes the prin\u00adciple of active early fire detec\u00adtion possible in the first place.\u201d The demands placed on the fan are corre\u00adspond\u00adingly high: \u201cAbove all, the fan must be very powerful to trans\u00adport the smoke parti\u00adcles to the smoke sensors quickly enough. In addi\u00adtion, high effi\u00adciency and a compact design were impor\u00adtant to us during devel\u00adop\u00adment so that the fan would fit into the limited instal\u00adla\u00adtion space of the aspi\u00adrating smoke detector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RVE45 from ebm-papst provided the optimal foun\u00adda\u00adtion to address these demands. With a face\u00adplate measuring approx\u00adi\u00admately 65 by 65 millime\u00adters, the centrifugal fan delivers substan\u00adtial perfor\u00admance in a small space. Its dynamic EC internal rotor motor achieves high speeds and responds quickly to changing pres\u00adsure condi\u00adtions. For use in the SecuriSmoke ASD 2000 product family, however, the stan\u00addard produc\u00adtion model was not suffi\u00adcient. Securiton and ebm-papst jointly tailored the RVE45 to the appli\u00adca\u00adtion. \u201cWe designed the fan for the speed range rele\u00advant to us \u2013 7,000 to 20,000 rpm \u2013 and opti\u00admized the bearing tech\u00adnology and the elec\u00adtrical inter\u00adface for our appli\u00adca\u00adtion,\u201d explains Hakan Sahin. To this end, both compa\u00adnies also conducted exten\u00adsive testing to imple\u00adment the indi\u00advidual require\u00adments step by step. The temper\u00ada\u00adture range proved partic\u00adu\u00adlarly chal\u00adlenging. The RVE45 is designed to operate just as reli\u00adably at -30 degrees Celsius as it does at +60 degrees Celsius \u2013 and to do so over a long service life. The solu\u00adtion: a special low-temper\u00ada\u00adture bearing grease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire protec\u00adtion at minimal volume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion to suction power, energy effi\u00adciency, and a compact design, noise levels also play a role \u2013 espe\u00adcially in spaces where people spend a lot of time. \u201cMuseums are a good example. Here, visi\u00adtors want to expe\u00adri\u00adence art and culture \u2013 not hear the fire alarm system,\u201d says Hakan Sahin. That\u2019s why Securiton and ebm-papst not only chose a partic\u00adu\u00adlarly quiet fan but also designed its instal\u00adla\u00adtion to mini\u00admize noise and vibra\u00adtion. The result: At the lowest speed, the aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors reach a sound pres\u00adsure level of around 21 deci\u00adbels. That\u2019s even quieter than a whisper. As a result, the aspi\u00adrating smoke detec\u00adtors in the SecuriSmoke ASD 2000 product family remain acousti\u00adcally in the back\u00adground and only sound the alarm when it really matters.
