Dr. Gril\u00adliat, everyone is talking about the new Ecode\u00adsign Direc\u00adtive. How do you perceive the mood in the industry?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Customers are uncer\u00adtain and don\u2019t yet know what to expect. Many compa\u00adnies don\u2019t have suffi\u00adcient capacity to delve deeply into such a regu\u00adla\u00adtion. The basic ques\u00adtion is quite simple: \u201cWill our company be a fan manu\u00adfac\u00adturer in the future\u2014yes or no?\u201d Those busi\u00adnesses who address this ques\u00adtion in time and seek our support will not run the risk of being caught off guard by the regu\u00adla\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly is ErP 2026\u2014and why is it now being tight\u00adened?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

ErP 2026 is the collo\u00adquial term for the new EU Regu\u00adla\u00adtion (EU) 2024\/1834<\/a>. It spec\u00adi\u00adfies the Ecode\u00adsign Direc\u00adtive for fans with an elec\u00adtrical input power between 125 watts and 500 kilo\u00adwatts and replaces the previous Fan Regu\u00adla\u00adtion 327\/2011\u2014often referred to as ErP 2015. The idea behind it is not new, but it is more rele\u00advant than ever: the aim is to increase energy effi\u00adciency, conserve resources and thus contribute to the EU\u2019s climate targets. Instead of focusing solely on the motor, the stricter regu\u00adla\u00adtion considers the fan as a complete system and supple\u00adments the effi\u00adciency require\u00adments with topics such as docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion require\u00adments, repara\u00adbility, and circular economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tech\u00adnical docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion includes all docu\u00adments that prove that a product meets legal require\u00adments, such as measure\u00adment reports, calcu\u00adla\u00adtions, tech\u00adnical data and descrip\u00adtions. It must be created by the manu\u00adfac\u00adturer and archived for many years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Complete vs. incom\u00adplete fan<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the ErP Regu\u00adla\u00adtion, a complete fan consists of at least a stator, rotor and motor. If one of these compo\u00adnents is missing or if they are deliv\u00adered sepa\u00adrately, the product is consid\u00adered an incom\u00adplete fan\u2014with impli\u00adca\u00adtions for the manufacturer\u2019s role and respon\u00adsi\u00adbility.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Manu\u00adfac\u00adturers within the meaning of the regu\u00adla\u00adtion<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A manu\u00adfac\u00adturer is not only someone who manu\u00adfac\u00adtures a product, but also someone who completes it, inte\u00adgrates it into a device, or places it on the market under their own name. OEMs, importers, system construc\u00adtion compa\u00adnies and oper\u00ada\u00adtors can thus become manu\u00adfac\u00adturers in legal terms.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Placing on the market<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n

Placing on the market refers to the first time a product is made avail\u00adable on the EU market\u2014regardless of whether it is sold, installed or passed on. This point in time is deci\u00adsive for the appli\u00adca\u00adtion of the ErP require\u00adments.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The new ErP Regu\u00adla\u00adtion will apply starting on July 24, 2026. Tran\u00adsi\u00adtion periods until 2027 apply to embedded fans, and addi\u00adtional regu\u00adla\u00adtions for spare parts will take effect in 2028.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Embedded fans<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Embedded fans are fans that are perma\u00adnently inte\u00adgrated into devices such as venti\u00adlation units, heat pumps or refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion systems. In some cases, longer tran\u00adsi\u00adtion periods apply to these fans before the new ErP require\u00adments take effect.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Replace\u00adment fan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n

A replace\u00adment fan is a fan that is used exclu\u00adsively to replace a defec\u00adtive existing product. Under certain condi\u00adtions, it may be sold even if it no longer meets the current ErP require\u00adments.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Spare part avail\u00adability and repara\u00adbility<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n

The ErP Regu\u00adla\u00adtion requires manu\u00adfac\u00adturers to keep certain spare parts avail\u00adable for many years and to enable repairs. The aim is to extend the service life of prod\u00aducts and conserve resources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

To what extent will fans be consid\u00adered a complete system in the future?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the new regu\u00adla\u00adtion, a fan consists of at least a stator, rotor, and motor\u2014i.e., the air-conducting elements, the impeller, and the elec\u00adtric drive. Only when these three compo\u00adnents come together can they legally be referred to as fans. In the future, the industry will there\u00adfore have to distin\u00adguish between \u201ccomplete\u201d and \u201cincom\u00adplete\u201d fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion, there are stricter minimum effi\u00adciency require\u00adments, addi\u00adtional infor\u00adma\u00adtion require\u00adments\u2014 for example, on partial load behavior\u2014and exten\u00adsive require\u00adments relating to spare parts and repara\u00adbility. Manu\u00adfac\u00adturers must provide certain spare parts for up to ten years and publish product infor\u00adma\u00adtion online for up to 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do these changes mean in concrete terms for OEMs, importers, plant manu\u00adfac\u00adturers and oper\u00ada\u00adtors?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The regu\u00adla\u00adtion will apply from July 24, 2026 onwards to anyone who places fans in the spec\u00adi\u00adfied perfor\u00admance range on the EU market for the first time, regard\u00adless of whether they manu\u00adfac\u00adture, import or install them. Anyone who inte\u00adgrates a fan that is incom\u00adplete by defi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion into a device, completes that fan and is then legally consid\u00adered a fan manu\u00adfac\u00adturer. This person is then respon\u00adsible for CE confor\u00admity (Confor\u00admit\u00e9 Europ\u00e9ene), including compli\u00adance with ErP require\u00adments. This means that you need to know exactly what you are buying and how you are installing it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the advan\u00adtages for customers when ebm-papst takes on the role of fan manu\u00adfac\u00adturer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our customers receive fully assem\u00adbled fans that can be inte\u00adgrated into their systems without any addi\u00adtional testing, docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, or coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion. The regu\u00adla\u00adtory respon\u00adsi\u00adbility lies entirely with ebm-papst, which means that our customers gain plan\u00adning secu\u00adrity and can concen\u00adtrate on their appli\u00adca\u00adtions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you explain the time\u00adline for the new regu\u00adla\u00adtion? What are the most impor\u00adtant mile\u00adstones?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The key date is July 24, 2026: From then on, the new ErP 2026 will formally apply. The stricter effi\u00adciency require\u00adments and docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion oblig\u00ada\u00adtions apply directly to new, stand-alone fans. The EU is granting a tran\u00adsi\u00adtion period until July 24, 2027 for fans built into venti\u00adlation units, heat pumps or refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion systems. By then at the latest, these \u201cembedded fans\u201d must also meet the new require\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 2028, the rules for replace\u00adment fans will also apply: From then on, manu\u00adfac\u00adturers will only be allowed to sell ErP 2026-compliant fans as replace\u00adment parts\u2014and only if no suit\u00adable compliant replace\u00adment is avail\u00adable and the use is clearly marked as a replace\u00adment part. Depending on the product, replace\u00adment parts and infor\u00adma\u00adtion may be avail\u00adable until 2037. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What specific steps is ebm-papst taking to support its customers on their path to ErP compli\u00adance?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, we have been closely involved in the legis\u00adla\u00adtion process. I repre\u00adsent ebm-papst in Euro\u00adpean asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtions, including Eurovent, and am chairman of the fan working group. Together with EVIA and AMCA, we have collab\u00ado\u00adrated on a Europe-wide FAQ docu\u00adment on the inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the regu\u00adla\u00adtion<\/a>. This enables us to provide our customers with targeted support in designing their prod\u00aducts and systems to be safe and future-proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why we are running a major internal project: we are inter\u00adpreting the regu\u00adla\u00adtion, reviewing our entire port\u00adfolio, iden\u00adti\u00adfying poten\u00adtial non-confor\u00admi\u00adties and deciding where to replace prod\u00aducts or develop new solu\u00adtions. At the same time, we are defining spare parts, preparing regis\u00adtra\u00adtion and ordering processes for repair compa\u00adnies, and adapting our CE decla\u00adra\u00adtions, type plates, and general terms and condi\u00adtions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And very impor\u00adtantly, we offer our customers tech\u00adnical support\u2014from labo\u00adra\u00adtory measure\u00adments and assis\u00adtance with product docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion to training courses. This saves them as much admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive effort as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To what extent can customers rely on ebm-papst solu\u00adtions being future-proof?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many of our current EC fans already meet the stricter effi\u00adciency require\u00adments. We will replace other prod\u00aducts that do not meet the new limits with more effi\u00adcient alter\u00adna\u00adtives. The big advan\u00adtage for our customers is that we deliver complete, ready-to-install fans including motor, impeller, stator, and elec\u00adtronics from a single source. We measure and docu\u00adment the effi\u00adciency of the entire system and provide the required CE decla\u00adra\u00adtion of confor\u00admity free of charge. Those who opt for this complete solu\u00adtion are on the safe side with regard to ErP 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would say: don\u2019t wait, take action now. The new ErP 2026 is not a tire\u00adsome formality, but an impor\u00adtant lever for energy and resource efficiency\u2014and thus also a compet\u00adi\u00adtive factor. Those who address the issue in good time can not only make their prod\u00aducts compliant, but also more attrac\u00adtive and effi\u00adcient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
