Running this many facil\u00adi\u00adties entails a huge amount of energy consump\u00adtion at a time when cost pres\u00adsure is increasing throughout the industry. The conver\u00adsion from outdated, belt-driven AC fans \u2013 such as those still found in most of the Foundation\u2019s hospi\u00adtals \u2013 to modern, energy-effi\u00adcient EC fans offers substan\u00adtial poten\u00adtial for savings. \u201cAlong\u00adside other suppliers, we were partic\u00adu\u00adlarly impressed by the quality, perfor\u00admance and energy effi\u00adciency of ebm-papst\u2019s fans and motors,\u201d adds Prior. Since DIN 1946-4 was last updated in 2018, hospi\u00adtals have been able to partially or completely switch off their venti\u00adlation systems for certain OR areas at night \u2013 some\u00adthing that was previ\u00adously not permitted. \u201cMany hospi\u00adtals don\u2019t even know that these new guide\u00adlines exist, even though they can save a lot of energy costs,\u201d says Markus Prinz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2025\/06\/Retrofit-Franziskusstiftung_Markus-Prinz_Markus-Prior_Anlage-scaled.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-37818\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Markus Prinz (left), Markus Prior (right) and their team focused on an inte\u00adgrated approach rather than 1-to-1 replace\u00adments when refur\u00adbishing the systems. (Photo | ebm-papst, Frank Peterschroeder\/Fotogloria)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The distinc\u00adtion in DIN 1946-4 between two classes of rooms is crucial here: Class I rooms include oper\u00adating rooms. Here, AHUs may be switched off if the systems continue to operate for at least 30 minutes after the rooms have been cleaned for the last time and all the doors have been closed, so that any mois\u00adture intro\u00adduced during cleaning is completely removed. Class II rooms include exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion rooms, emer\u00adgency admis\u00adsion rooms, inten\u00adsive care rooms, recovery rooms and delivery rooms. In these rooms, the AHUs can be switched off completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group mgznkr-elements mgznkr-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The new VDI guide\u00adlines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DIN 1946-4 is a stan\u00addard that deals with venti\u00adlation and air-condi\u00adtioning systems in build\u00adings and rooms in the health\u00adcare sector. It spec\u00adi\u00adfies detailed require\u00adments for the plan\u00adning, construc\u00adtion, oper\u00ada\u00adtion and main\u00adte\u00adnance of these systems, with a partic\u00adular focus on hospi\u00adtals, oper\u00adating rooms and other medical facil\u00adi\u00adties. The main aim of the stan\u00addard is to mini\u00admize the risk of infec\u00adtion and create an optimal envi\u00adron\u00adment for medical treat\u00adment by providing precise spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions for air quality, air duct design and filtra\u00adtion. DIN 1946-4 is regarded as an impor\u00adtant stan\u00addard in hospital tech\u00adnology and is regu\u00adlarly updated to reflect the latest find\u00adings in hygiene and tech\u00adnology.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The night-time shut\u00addown is controlled via FACT-designed control panels on the OR equip\u00adment that allow the venti\u00adlation systems to be oper\u00adated easily and effi\u00adciently. An intu\u00aditive user inter\u00adface makes it easier for medical and cleaning staff to switch the systems on and off as required, which also helps to save energy. The retrofit and the new intel\u00adli\u00adgent fans enable the system to be controlled by panel as well as through the building manage\u00adment system. (Photo | ebm-papst, Frank Peterschroeder\/Fotogloria)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demand-based control with sensors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another compo\u00adnent of the retrofit was the instal\u00adla\u00adtion of sensors to measure things like the temper\u00ada\u00adture, humidity, and CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;content of ambient air both in oper\u00adating rooms and in meeting rooms, seminar rooms and other inte\u00adrior rooms. Room occu\u00adpancy and other para\u00adme\u00adters are also recorded and moni\u00adtored in FACT\u2019s building manage\u00adment system. This is partic\u00adu\u00adlarly impor\u00adtant in hospi\u00adtals, where AHUs often have to meet specific and constantly changing room and air flow require\u00adments. Combined with energy-saving EC fans from ebm-papst, these sensors enable precise, demand-based control. This is because the EC fans can be precisely regu\u00adlated across their entire speed range and even work more effi\u00adciently at low speed in the partial load range. This allows the system to deliver the exact amount of air required at all times, ensuring optimum indoor air quality while maxi\u00admizing energy effi\u00adciency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick instal\u00adla\u00adtion thanks to plug &amp; play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In hospi\u00adtals, the avail\u00adability and reli\u00ada\u00adbility of AHUs are essen\u00adtial. For this reason, and espe\u00adcially for systems respon\u00adsible for oper\u00adating rooms, time windows for conver\u00adsions are extremely narrow, often limited to one or two days, usually falling on week\u00adends or at night. These narrow time frames require compo\u00adnents that enable quick and effi\u00adcient imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion \u2013 such as the RadiPac and RadiFit fans, which are plug &amp; play and can there\u00adfore be installed and put into oper\u00ada\u00adtion in a very short time. (Photos | ebm-papst)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate neutrality and cost pres\u00adsure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustain\u00adability is a key compo\u00adnent of St. Franziskus-Stiftung M\u00fcnster\u2019s corpo\u00adrate strategy. Switching to a more CO<sub>2<\/sub>-friendly anes\u00adthetic and reducing pack\u00adaging and hospital waste are just some of the measures, says Verena G\u00f6lkel: \u201cVenti\u00adlation systems account for around 30 percent of elec\u00adtricity costs in the hospi\u00adtals. This gives us the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to achieve substan\u00adtial savings. Under the lead\u00ader\u00adship of Markus Prinz and Markus Prior, the FACT team replaced a total of 70 old fans with modern, energy-saving EC models in 18 AHUs across five hospi\u00adtals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2025\/06\/Retrofit-Franziskusstiftung_Bedienpanel-Nachtabschaltung-scaled.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-37819\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Once all the rooms requiring control are no longer in oper\u00ada\u00adtion and cleaning has been completed, the control panel displays the time remaining until shut\u00addown.
