Markus Mettler, Director of Tech\u00adnical Oper\u00ada\u00adtions & Real Estate FM, has been involved in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of this area since day one. He remem\u00adbers our first, tenta\u00adtive steps well: \u201cWhen we founded the \u2018Hohen\u00adlohe Model\u2019 regional initia\u00adtive with a handful of fellow campaigners back in 1991, hardly anyone was talking about energy. It was only when we started imple\u00admenting the energy effi\u00adciency tables in 2002 that the topic gained momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, energy consump\u00adtion and energy effi\u00adciency are an inte\u00adgral part of every corpo\u00adrate strategy, just as they are at ebm-papst. To this end, the amount of energy required at the company \u2013 which is gener\u00adated and provided using a mixture of gas, elec\u00adtricity, heating oil, and fuels \u2013 is largely docu\u00admented using a modern data collec\u00adtion system. \u201cWe are working on incor\u00adpo\u00adrating the ISO 50001 energy manage\u00adment stan\u00addard into our inte\u00adgrated manage\u00adment system,\u201d says Markus Mettler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even aside from this initia\u00adtive, we are already making very effi\u00adcient use of the energy our company gener\u00adates itself. One example of this is our plant in Hollen\u00adbach: Built in 2007, the plant is a plus energy building, which means that it produces more energy than the building itself requires. The site received an Energy Effi\u00adciency Award for its design in 2009. This effect is thanks largely to two photo\u00advoltaic systems and two combined heat and power plants, which together generate around 3.5 million kWh\/a. In the third quarter of 2024, a third photo\u00advoltaic plant with around 2.2 million kWh\/a will be connected to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce that is done, we will be producing around 5.7 million of the approx. 10 million kWh\/a we need by ourselves. This will increase the percentage of our energy consump\u00adtion that we cover ourselves. Other sustain\u00adability projects that we will be imple\u00admenting include fitting the entire site with high-quality LED lights and, in the long term, replacing or elec\u00adtri\u00adfying our heating oil supply, a fossil fuel that we are still using currently.\u201d Using waste heat from our produc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties and data center to heat cooler areas such as ware\u00adhouses and indi\u00advidual produc\u00adtion areas also helps to increase our energy effi\u00adciency. Poten\u00adtial thermal energy that cannot be used straight away is stored for later use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
