He is Group Facil\u00adi\u00adties Manage\u00adment Director at the DFI Retail Group, one of Asia\u2019s largest retailers. In this role, he is respon\u00adsible for ensuring that oper\u00ada\u00adtions run smoothly in the 10,600 super\u00admar\u00adkets and grocery stores that the group oper\u00adates in 13 coun\u00adtries under 27 brands. Besides Market Place, this also includes the Well\u00adcome super\u00admar\u00adkets and 7-Eleven stores, which satisfy the hunger and thirst of millions of people in the Pearl River Delta Metro\u00adpol\u00aditan Region. We have to combat these envi\u00adron\u00admental condi\u00adtions on a daily basis so that we can keep the temper\u00ada\u00adture in the refrig\u00ader\u00adated display cases at a constant zero to four degrees Celsius and as low as -18 degrees in the freezers,\u201d says Abel. The refrig\u00ader\u00adator and freezer shelves are there\u00adfore an impor\u00adtant factor in reducing energy consump\u00adtion. \u201cMost of the appli\u00adances had AC motors, so we decided to replace them with effi\u00adcient EC tech\u00adnology,\u201d explains Chow, who there\u00adfore approached the ebm-papst team in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An effi\u00adcient motor for cooling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Hong Kong, Chow met up with Daniel Yiu and Darius Wu, who are very familiar with solu\u00adtions for refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors and freezers. \u201cOur iQC motor was specially designed for refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion units and copes very well with the harsh envi\u00adron\u00adment that exists there,\u201d says Yiu. The motor is crucial for effi\u00adcient oper\u00ada\u00adtion. It has to run around the clock and drive the fan, which distrib\u00adutes the cold evenly in the appli\u00adance. If it fails, the merchan\u00addise is at risk of spoiling. A high level of reli\u00ada\u00adbility is there\u00adfore required. Thanks to EC tech\u00adnology, the iQC motor is much more effi\u00adcient than the older models in the iQ motor series, but is the same size. (Photo | Keith Tsuji)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A good selling point for DFI and City Facility Manage\u00adment, as 80 percent of the appli\u00adances already run on ebm-papst motors. Initially, three super\u00admar\u00adkets were selected for a pilot project and the old motors were replaced by the new iQC model. Abel and Chow were impressed by the initial measure\u00adments, which showed that the fans consumed 50 percent less elec\u00adtricity while achieving a better air perfor\u00admance. \u201cWe also inquired with other manu\u00adfac\u00adturers, but none of their solu\u00adtions deliv\u00adered results anywhere near as good as the iQC,\u201d says Chow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retrofit in record time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to these good results, Abel and Chow decided to imple\u00adment the retrofit on a large scale, aiming to replace around 10,000 motors in some 1,000 stores in Hong Kong in just six months. This was no easy task, and not just because of the sheer numbers involved and the tight time budget: \u201cWith a project like this, there are many players that we have to coor\u00addi\u00adnate in advance,\u201d says Abel. In addi\u00adtion, there had to be as little disrup\u00adtion to oper\u00ada\u00adtions as possible so that busi\u00adness could continue as normal. For those involved, this meant working a lot of night shifts as the retrofit had to be carried out outside of busi\u00adness hours. No sooner had the last customer left than the fitters got to work removing the merchan\u00addise, replacing the motor and putting every\u00adthing back in the appli\u00adance. This takes about an hour per refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion unit. \u201cThe retrofit itself is very simple; the old motor is replaced by the new one within ten minutes,\u201d explains Chow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2024\/01\/retrofit_Hongkong_Supermarkt_iqc_Daniel-Yiu_ebm-papst-660x371.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-30880\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Darius Wu (right) from ebm-papst Hong Kong was impressed with the iQC motor. In just six months, DFI has already saved 1,270 tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>. This is not only good for the climate, but also for busi\u00adness, as the bottom line is that this measure has already reduced energy costs by 350,000 US dollars. \u201cThe retrofit will have paid for itself in two years,\u201d says Abel. There is also another benefit: thanks to EC tech\u00adnology, the iQC motors have a much longer service life, as brush\u00adless motors don\u2019t wear out due to fric\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DFI has already come a little closer to its own climate target thanks to the retrofit. But Abel and Chow still have a lot to do.
