So what is changing now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hans Peter Fuchs:<\/strong> Indeed, sustain\u00adability is part of our DNA. Since the company was founded, the focus has been on increasing the effi\u00adciency of prod\u00aducts. At the new building in Hollen\u00adbach, we pursued green tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies and CO\u2082 savings in as early as the mid-2000s. Our appren\u00adtices that serve as Energy Scouts have been looking for energy guzzlers in produc\u00adtion since 2010, which many compa\u00adnies have since been using as a model. It is not surprising that we won the German Sustain\u00adability Award in 2013 for all our efforts. Every\u00adthing we do is also veri\u00adfi\u00adable. This requires agile struc\u00adtures and an ambi\u00adtious team. With the new ESG (Envi\u00adron\u00admental, Social and Gover\u00adnance) depart\u00adment, we are able to bring the company together glob\u00adally and work together with all our sites. The under\u00adstanding of the term has also changed: so far, sustain\u00adability has often been equated with climate or envi\u00adron\u00admental protec\u00adtion. However, sustain\u00adability is a holistic concept that includes social aspects and respon\u00adsible corpo\u00adrate manage\u00adment in addi\u00adtion to the envi\u00adron\u00adment. We are now working on this system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Never\u00adthe\u00adless, let\u2019s talk about climate&nbsp;goals first: When he took up his posi\u00adtion, CEO Klaus Gei\u00dfd\u00f6rfer said&nbsp;that ebm-papst has to become climate neutral more quickly. How quickly can that happen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wittmann:<\/strong> By 2025, we want to be climate neutral for Scope 1 and 2. The first priority for us is preventing emis\u00adsions. Our focus is on contin\u00aduing to drive energy effi\u00adciency projects forward. I am thinking of poten\u00adtial savings in building manage\u00adment, machinery, and our produc\u00adtion processes. The second measure is investing in renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies for our own require\u00adments. We will be expanding or installing new photo\u00advoltaic systems and renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies wher\u00adever it makes tech\u00adnical sense. This also relieves the burden on the power grids and can cover a good portion of our required elec\u00adtricity. A third step will be &nbsp;to switch the elec\u00adtricity we purchase to green elec\u00adtricity as quickly as possible. By purchasing elec\u00adtricity from renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies by the end of 2023, we will manage to prevent about 60 percent of our total CO\u2082 emis\u00adsions in Germany, China, the USA, and four other coun\u00adtries. Wher\u00adever it is tech\u00adni\u00adcally impos\u00adsible to prevent or reduce emis\u00adsions, we use compen\u00adsa\u00adtion certifi\u00adcates and support longterm climate protec\u00adtion projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does this affect your own prod\u00aducts, which are usually very energy-effi\u00adcient?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuchs:<\/strong> Most of our prod\u00aducts are so effi\u00adcient that they consume rela\u00adtively little energy. We will make them even more effi\u00adcient and digi\u00adtalize them even more so that we can save even more. But they will continue to consume energy in and of itself, also because they are often used for decades. For Scope 3, we there\u00adfore also need to look long term at the energy mix used to operate our prod\u00aducts in the appli\u00adca\u00adtion. Another impor\u00adtant aspect that we are now taking into account more is the circular economy. That was not the focus in the past. Here too, a strong rethink is required. Because, on the devel\u00adop\u00adment side, this affects how a product is constructed, so it can be disman\u00adtled again. And then there is the ques\u00adtion of returning them, i.e. how do I bring these raw mate\u00adrials back into the cycle. In the future, we need to think more holis\u00adti\u00adcally and always keep an eye on the issues of the envi\u00adron\u00adment, social aspects, and respon\u00adsible corpo\u00adrate manage\u00adment. This applies not only to those in charge, but to all employees. After all, everyone makes a contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to this change and is an ambas\u00adsador to the outside world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuchs:<\/strong> The goal is to get so far that this is an almost subcon\u00adscious process: Is the deci\u00adsion I make today also a sustain\u00adable one \u2013 for the climate and the company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surely customers will ask them\u00adselves: What does this approach to sustain\u00adability at ebm-papst mean for me?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wittmann:<\/strong> Above all, I see the need for more part\u00adner\u00adship and greater collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion and networking throughout the supply chain. Also in regards to the social aspects of sustain\u00adability, this will have a posi\u00adtive impact on working together. For me, sustain\u00adable busi\u00adness means \u201clooking to the future together.\u201d When it comes to climate change, a signif\u00adi\u00adcant improve\u00adment is only possible \u2013 espe\u00adcially in Scope 3 \u2013 in part\u00adner\u00adship with the supply chain and with customers. Collab\u00ado\u00adrating closely with our suppliers to analyze the supply chain is crucial to success. Reducing emis\u00adsions in the product usage phase is only possible if we work more closely with our customers and also gain data on how and where our prod\u00aducts are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuchs: <\/strong>Sustain\u00adability is an invest\u00adment in the future. It is also impor\u00adtant to under\u00adstand that our customers expect us to be moving forward with sustain\u00adability! They are subject to the same require\u00adments and we can help reduce their carbon foot\u00adprint. To become climate neutral, we need to look at the entire value chain and get better and better.
