In the testing center in Hollen\u00adbach, fans are pushed to their limits and beyond with real-life envi\u00adron\u00admental influ\u00adences. New prod\u00aducts, sizes and compo\u00adnents pass through the test stations in a total of six test bays over an area of approx\u00adi\u00admately 2,500 square meters. In this series, we take a closer look at each of these test bays. The fifth one deals specif\u00adi\u00adcally with the effects of salt spray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans are also used on the coast or out at sea. The air there is salty and can thus affect the service life of the prod\u00aducts. \u201cSalty air affects fans,\u201d explains Erich Kemmer, Group Leader Vali\u00adda\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHowever, this test bay is not about mapping their use out at sea and the resulting loads. That wouldn\u2019t be easy to do either; after all, the salt content of the air varies and the effect on the fan also depends on factors such as the wind. Our aim is to find out as quickly as possible whether corro\u00adsion occurs on the test spec\u00adi\u00admens under the influ\u00adence of salt spray.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this end, the test spec\u00adi\u00admens \u2013 which can be entire fans or indi\u00advidual compo\u00adnents \u2013 are exposed to a mist of salty air in closed cham\u00adbers at the testing center. This atmos\u00adphere does not mimic real salty air as closely as possible; instead, it in fact has a signif\u00adi\u00adcantly higher salt content, which can affect the fan in the real world due to the weather as well as chem\u00adical or climatic influ\u00adences. The test is primarily intended to check the quality of the coat\u00adings and welding points. Are they suscep\u00adtible to corro\u00adsion? Are seals infil\u00adtrated? Could this allow mois\u00adture to pene\u00adtrate the fan, the motor wind\u00adings, or the elec\u00adtronics?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
