It is certain that existing resources must be used more effi\u00adciently to provide people with the same stan\u00addard of living, or to improve the supply situ\u00ada\u00adtion for people in devel\u00adoping coun\u00adtries in a sustain\u00adable way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In vertical indoor farming, plants are produced above one another in build\u00adings, containers or in air-condi\u00adtioned super\u00admarket cabi\u00adnets. It is seen as a future-oriented tech\u00adnology for ensuring a food supply, as this allows urban spaces to be used sustain\u00adably for agri\u00adcul\u00adture, saving addi\u00adtional trans\u00adporta\u00adtion time and costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading no-clear\">Econom\u00adical solu\u00adtions are in demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fan and motor specialist ebm-papst has been working on this issue for quite some time now. The poten\u00adtial of this tech\u00adnology can be only exploited if the <strong>light, nutri\u00adents, venti\u00adlation, temper\u00ada\u00adture and humidity<\/strong> are right. The basic prereq\u00adui\u00adsite for this is economic systems that always operate according to the demand and very effi\u00adciently, not only for the air condi\u00adtioning and nutrient supply, but also in <strong>auto\u00admated product handling<\/strong> and <strong>trans\u00adport<\/strong>. Only then can indoor farms operate econom\u00adi\u00adcally and sustain\u00adably.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optimum air supply and air condi\u00adtioning for every system size<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different concepts for venti\u00adlation and air condi\u00adtioning. Tunnel venti\u00adlation pushes the air through the building. However, central venti\u00adlation units installed on roofs are also common as is providing indi\u00advidual plants or floors with a targeted air supply via pipe and tube systems (Fig. 1), which must also be supplied accord\u00adingly. Different fans are required here: Compact axial fans move high air flows of up to 65,000 m\u00b3\/h and operate reli\u00adably even at back pres\u00adsures of up to 1,500 Pa (Fig. 2).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2023\/04\/Vertical_farming_ebm-papst_Schlauchbelueftung-960x540.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-28056\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig. 1: A hose venti\u00adlation system supplies the plants with oxygen. A compre\u00adhen\u00adsive range of acces\u00adsories enables further modi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions to be made, such as guard grills. It is possible for the power supply to be 5 to 110 VDC or 11 to 480 VAC. Centrifugal fans are partic\u00adu\u00adlarly impres\u00adsive at high back pres\u00adsures up to 5,200 Pa (Fig. 3). Their air flow rates are up to 30,000 m\u00b3\/h. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are avail\u00adable with forward or back\u00adward-curved blades and in a scroll housing or as free\u00adwheel fans as appro\u00adpriate. Versions with external rotor motor in the impeller are also very compact and there\u00adfore require little instal\u00adla\u00adtion space in the venti\u00adlation units usually installed on the roof. The power supply provided is 6 to 72 VDC or 85 to 480 VAC. Compact fans have proven their worth for air condi\u00adtioning in super\u00admarket cabi\u00adnets, for venti\u00adlation of indi\u00advidual shelves and for cooling LEDs.
