For Germany\u2019s elite speed skaters, the Sport\u00adforum in Berlin is an impor\u00adtant training facility, as its speed skating rink is the local Olympic training center, the venue for inter\u00adna\u00adtional compe\u00adti\u00adtions, and a large number of Berlin clubs also train there. Athletes can count on perfect condi\u00adtions \u2013 including immac\u00adu\u00adlately smooth ice. But this can only be achieved if the climate in the arena is also constantly cool and dry. This is no easy task, as activ\u00adi\u00adties in the rink vary greatly: from concen\u00adtrated training by a few Olympians on the 262- and 440-meter lanes and public hustle and bustle on the 1,800-square-meter ice surface to compe\u00adti\u00adtions with 3,500 spec\u00adta\u00adtors in the stands. Temper\u00ada\u00adture fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions also go hand in hand with changing capacity utiliza\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ice rink was built in 1962 and expanded in 1986.

The total ice surface is 4,400 square meters.

Mirror-smooth instead of a drip\u00adstone cave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This creates conden\u00adsa\u00adtion that can collect on the ceiling and struts and drip onto the ice surface. However, it\u2019s not so good to skate on the begin\u00adnings of a drip\u00adstone cave. \u201cWe need the arena temper\u00ada\u00adture to be eight degrees Celsius so that the differ\u00adence between the ice and the ambient temper\u00ada\u00adture doesn\u2019t lead to conden\u00adsa\u00adtion or mist forma\u00adtion,\u201d explains Sven Kuwatsch, tech\u00adnical manager of the Sport\u00adforum.<\/p>\n\n\n

That\u2019s why the venti\u00adlation systems in the belly of the arena are working at full speed. \u201cOne runs contin\u00adu\u00adously, a second is switched on when there is a lot of activity, and the third is the redun\u00addancy in case one of the other two fails,\u201d explains Daniel B\u00fcrgel, Customer Service at Munters GmbH, which manu\u00adfac\u00adtures and main\u00adtains the systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
