Air\/water heat pumps extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer the heat to the heating system, which warms the living areas or is used to heat water. Fans ensure the neces\u00adsary external air flow through the device\u2019s evap\u00ado\u00adrator and inevitably generate more or less noise during oper\u00ada\u00adtion. This also applies to the fans with EC motors that are partic\u00adu\u00adlarly quiet. Where they are installed can also have a nega\u00adtive impact on noise gener\u00ada\u00adtion. Noise gener\u00ada\u00adtion always needs to be consid\u00adered by those who use air\/water heat pumps. As a rule, it is not usually suffi\u00adcient to merely observe the limit values of the local stan\u00addards and noise protec\u00adtion ordi\u00adnances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Psychoa\u00adcoustics: Why does a noise sound unpleasant?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The values defined in the guide\u00adlines and stan\u00addards, which can be measured on the test stand, have little to do with indi\u00advidual human noise percep\u00adtion. Until now, stan\u00addards and direc\u00adtives have not adequately dealt with tonality, i.e. the rela\u00adtions between tones. Different psychoa\u00adcoustic tests are currently looking into this. Psychoa\u00adcoustics aims to define why we perceive noise as pleasant or unpleasant. For example, trumpet music and an exca\u00advator at a construc\u00adtion site have approx\u00adi\u00admately the same measur\u00adable sound power, but our psychoa\u00adcoustic assess\u00adment of them is completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2023\/03\/luft-wasser-waermepumpe_psychoakustik_ebm-papst_audimax-testlabor-960x540.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-27678\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig. 1: Das Psychoakustik-Labor f\u00fcr Testh\u00f6rer:innen bei ebm-papst in Mulfingen. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Motor and fan specialist ebm-papst studied this issue early on and set up a special psychoa\u00adcoustics labo\u00adra\u00adtory for test subjects to demon\u00adstrate the oper\u00adating noise of heat pumps and the fans installed in it in various config\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtions (Fig. 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group article-sidebox\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best prod\u00aducts&nbsp;for your heat pumps<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2025\/07\/waermepumpe_natuerliche-kaeltemittel_header-edited.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-38223\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:200px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Heat pumps absorb energy from their surround\u00adings and then feed it into the heating or service water system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-custom-font-size wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebmpapst.com\/de\/en\/industries\/heating-technology\/heat-pumps.html\" style=\"font-size:18px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more <i class=\"mgznkr-icon fa fa-chevron-right fas\"><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mini\u00admize oper\u00adating noise of air\/water heat pumps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Devel\u00adopers ques\u00adtion the subjects after\u00adwards to build up a scien\u00adtif\u00adi\u00adcally founded data\u00adbase, for example based on the following key psychoa\u00adcoustic para\u00adme\u00adters: loud\u00adness [sone], sharp\u00adness [acum], pitch [mel], rough\u00adness [asper] and fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtion strength [vacil]. In addi\u00adtion, tonality and stim\u00adulus are also signif\u00adi\u00adcant vari\u00adables. Tonality is present when single tones are notice\u00adable within a noise, which increases the inter\u00adfer\u00adence effect. Noises that contain rapid changes in level, e.g. knocking or ramming noise, are iden\u00adti\u00adfied with impul\u00adsive\u00adness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The results from the psychoa\u00adcoustics labo\u00adra\u00adtory are incor\u00adpo\u00adrated into fan devel\u00adop\u00adment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Both impul\u00adsive\u00adness and tonality can be measured with micro\u00adphones and compared with the test subjects\u2019 state\u00adments. Assess\u00adments by the test subjects are analyzed using statis\u00adtical and psycho\u00adlog\u00adical methods. The results are incor\u00adpo\u00adrated into in-house fan devel\u00adop\u00adment, but also provide infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the tested air\/water heat pumps and which fans are best suited to the indi\u00advidual instal\u00adla\u00adtion scenario. Ulti\u00admately, the aim is to ensure that the oper\u00adating noise of a high-quality heat pump that is already very low is perceived as pleasant by the widest possible group of test subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Metric for psychoa\u00adcoustic eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research on psychoa\u00adcoustics is in full swing and we can look forward to more results. For this purpose, <strong>subjec\u00adtive dimen\u00adsions of percep\u00adtion<\/strong> with measur\u00adable psychoa\u00adcoustic vari\u00adables (<strong>objec\u00adtive dimen\u00adsions of percep\u00adtion<\/strong>) are brought into play. The closer the<strong> corre\u00adla\u00adtion coef\u00adfi\u00adcient r<\/strong> is to 1, the more suited the model to depicting the subjec\u00adtive aspects of percep\u00adtion through objec\u00adtive (measur\u00adable) ones. The <strong>acoustic quality Q<\/strong>, which then repre\u00adsents the fan\u2019s perceived noise, should be as high as possible. <em>(Grafic | ebm-papst)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of this metric is to create a corre\u00adla\u00adtion between the subjec\u00adtive perceived noise quality, which presents itself in different \u201cdimen\u00adsions\u201d, and objec\u00adtively measur\u00adable vari\u00adables. During the exten\u00adsive hearing tests carried out, different dimen\u00adsions of percep\u00adtion were compared to one another and to phys\u00adical measured values. A total of 123 test subjects between the ages of 19 and 60 were played 89 sounds in three series of exper\u00adi\u00adments in real\u00adistic condi\u00adtions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-article-450 is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2023\/03\/luft-wasser-waermepumpe_psychoakustik_ebm-papst_test-stand-450x800.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-27725\" style=\"width:250px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig. 2: In this measuring device, noises are recorded via a variety of micro\u00adphones and then played to the test subjects for eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"no-clear\">For each series of exper\u00adi\u00adments, 30 to 40 of these test subjects assessed the noise recorded (Fig. 2) in terms of perfor\u00admance (slow\/strong, high-qual\u00adi\u00adty\/low-quality), sound level (hissing or whooshing), time struc\u00adture (fluc\u00adtu\u00adating), quality (pleasant\/disruptive) and pitch (humming, dark\/light). In addi\u00adtion, different noises were directly compared and noises were checked against one prop\u00aderty for a rating scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading no-clear\">Quieter heat pumps thanks to psychoa\u00adcoustics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Addi\u00adtional inter\u00adviews from the test subjects revealed that the noise char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics dark, deep, slow, monotone, consis\u00adtent, soft and light were consid\u00adered pleasant. On the contrary, rattling, flut\u00adtering, clashing, drip\u00adping, humming, changing, high, bright and hissing prop\u00ader\u00adties were consid\u00adered unpleasant. Overall, it was quite accept\u00adable for the test subjects that oper\u00adating noise was gener\u00adated, but they must be perceived as pleasant. Finally, however, the eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion of the hearing tests showed above all that the \u201cdistur\u00adbance level\u201d can be largely combined with objec\u00adtive psychoa\u00adcoustic para\u00adme\u00adters.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ebmpapst-7237.kxcdn.com\/de\/files\/2023\/03\/luft-wasser-waermepumpe_psychoakustik_ebm-papst_ventilatoren-fuer-waermepumpen-260x146.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-27680\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig. 3: ebm-papst fans are not only ideal for use in heat pumps with flam\u00admable refrig\u00ader\u00adants. (Photo | ebm-papst) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Based on this, two follow-up objec\u00adtives can now be defined: In future, the aim is to also use psychoa\u00adcoustics in addi\u00adtion to the phys\u00adical para\u00adme\u00adters for assessing noise in fans (Fig. 3). The aim is also to work towards the intro\u00adduc\u00adtion of an inter\u00adna\u00adtional stan\u00addard based on stan\u00addard\u00adized psychoa\u00adcoustic vari\u00adables.
