People breathe up to 15,000 liters of air in and out every day. Yet few people give much thought to the quality of the air they breathe. Partic\u00adu\u00adlarly indoors, where we spend more than 90 percent of our time on average, values such as temper\u00ada\u00adture, humidity, and PM2.5 (fine dust with an aero\u00addy\u00adnamic diam\u00adeter smaller than 2.5 microm\u00ade\u00adters) are crucial for well-being and health in addi\u00adtion to CO2<\/sub> content. These vari\u00adables have been shown to have a direct impact on the prob\u00ada\u00adbility of viral infec\u00adtions such as influenza, SARS-CoV-1 or SARS-CoV-2. The RESET Viral Index provides real-time infor\u00adma\u00adtion about these prob\u00ada\u00adbli\u00adties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the under\u00adlying formula, RESET researchers first eval\u00adu\u00adated more than 100 studies on air quality and infec\u00adtion poten\u00adtial and clas\u00adsi\u00adfied them into four key para\u00adme\u00adters that influ\u00adence infec\u00adtion risk: virus surviv\u00adability, host immune system health, dosage (amount over time), and trans\u00admis\u00adsion rate\/infection. They then inves\u00adti\u00adgated how these para\u00adme\u00adters could be mapped with measured values to make them applic\u00adable to building oper\u00ada\u00adtions and venti\u00adlation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rela\u00adtive measured values for temper\u00ada\u00adture and humidity are incor\u00adpo\u00adrated into the \u201cvirus surviv\u00adability\u201d and \u201chost immune system health\u201d para\u00adme\u00adters. They are highly inter\u00adde\u00adpen\u00addent: warm and humid air increases virus surviv\u00adability, for example, while dry air makes it more diffi\u00adcult for the body to remove viruses via the mucous membranes and increases the risk of infec\u00adtion. <\/p>\n\n\n

The \u201cPM2.5 impact\u201d measures the number of suspended parti\u00adcles in the air: the higher the concen\u00adtra\u00adtion of PM2.5, the higher the risk of infec\u00adtion. The \u201cdosage\u201d para\u00admeter is based on the CO2<\/sub> value and reflects the occu\u00adpa\u00adtion level of a room with people and thus the risk of becoming infected. On average, about 1,000 viruses have to be inhaled before infec\u00adtion occurs\u200a\ue814\u200aif the room is full of people talking and breathing, the risk increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reli\u00adable results depend on reli\u00adable data\u200a which is why temper\u00ada\u00adture, humidity, CO2<\/sub> and PM2.5 levels are contin\u00adu\u00adously measured by sensors. The index uses a number to provide infor\u00adma\u00adtion about air quality and the risk of infec\u00adtion. A value of 100 percent means that indoor air quality is optimal and the risk of infec\u00adtion is minimal, while 1 percent indi\u00adcates very poor air and a very high risk of infec\u00adtion. So users are not only informed in real time, but can also take appro\u00adpriate action to close poten\u00adtial \u201csafety gaps\u201d in venti\u00adlation systems.\u2002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
