(Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Two air handling units (AHUs) supply a large furni\u00adture store, including a ware\u00adhouse, in Dubai with fresh, cooled air. Belt-driven AC fans were used for this (Fig. 1). The control concept imple\u00admented on site allowed for one of the two AHUs to always be in oper\u00ada\u00adtion at full load for six months, while the other AHU was out of service at the same time. After six months, the other AHU took over the supply of fresh air again. Since the AC fans could only ever operate at a single speed, a lot of energy was wasted, above all when there were few people in the furni\u00adture store, as more fresh air was supplied than required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was only one solu\u00adtion that could be imple\u00admented both econom\u00adi\u00adcally and within the required time for these prob\u00adlems. This was equip\u00adping the AHUs with new, effi\u00adcient fans and opti\u00admizing the control system in line with require\u00adments. Jon Davies was awarded the retrofit with his company Qey Energy Solu\u00adtions, which has its head\u00adquar\u00adters in Dubai. This was also the case in this project. Qey calcu\u00adlated four days for the conver\u00adsion of an AHU. If the other unit failed during this time, there would be no more fresh air supply for the furni\u00adture store. This time pres\u00adsure meant that the new fans needed to be installed quickly and smoothly. The new solu\u00adtion thus had to be installed in the AHU so it saved space and was as ready in advance as it could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the \u201cMatrixAir+ EC\u201d fan package from Qey was used. This complete solu\u00adtion consists of four prod\u00aducts: EC fans, fan connec\u00adtion boxes, fan bulk\u00adheads, and control panels. For the first compo\u00adnent, EC centrifugal fans from the RadiPac series from ebm-papst (Fig. 2) were chosen, as their compact design and ready-to-install plug-&amp;-play design make them easy to install. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FanGrid ensures oper\u00ada\u00adtional reli\u00ada\u00adbility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A FanGrid consists of several small fans arranged next to or above one another and oper\u00adated in parallel (Fig. 3). The redun\u00addant design increases the reli\u00ada\u00adbility of the entire system and ensures oper\u00ada\u00adtional reli\u00ada\u00adbility. If one fan fails, the other EC fans compen\u00adsate for the missing air volume. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This offers the neces\u00adsary reli\u00ada\u00adbility, partic\u00adu\u00adlarly in large plants and espe\u00adcially hot regions like Dubai. In addi\u00adtion, it is no longer neces\u00adsary to operate an AHU constantly at full load while the second serves as a back-up. The current fresh air require\u00adments are distrib\u00aduted evenly across both AHUs (Fig. 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fans are oper\u00adated at partial load, which has a posi\u00adtive effect on the service life. Another advan\u00adtage of this type of setup is that the flow through upstream and down\u00adstream compo\u00adnents, such as filters or heat exchangers, is more uniform. This results in more effi\u00adcient filtering of the air, as well as better heat transfer perfor\u00admance, and thus a reduc\u00adtion in oper\u00adating costs. Several small fans may also require less space and are lighter than one large fan, making replace\u00adment easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading no-clear\">EC motor saves energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main aim of the retrofit was to save energy. This can be achieved through two mutu\u00adally bene\u00adfi\u00adcial measures: replacing the fans and reworking the control system. Those involved in the project in Dubai decided on both to exploit the greatest possible energy saving poten\u00adtial. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also infi\u00adnitely adjustable, ensuring demand-based oper\u00ada\u00adtion \u2013 so between 0 and one hundred percent instead of just on and off as is the case with AC fans. This results in signif\u00adi\u00adcant savings poten\u00adtial, as the power consump\u00adtion increases or falls in line with the speed to the power of three (P~n\u00b3). This means that if the speed is reduced by half compared to the nominal speed, the required power consump\u00adtion is reduced by a factor of 8 and is there\u00adfore only 12.5% of the rated output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if half of the number of AC fans is switched off and the other half still oper\u00adates at full load, only 50% of the power consump\u00adtion can be saved. The reduc\u00adtion in speed also leads to signif\u00adi\u00adcant advan\u00adtages in terms of noise emis\u00adsions. Thanks to the wide optimum effi\u00adciency range of centrifugal fans, they work with as little power consump\u00adtion as possible at just about every oper\u00adating point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demand-based control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After replacing the fans, they moved onto the control system (Fig. 5). The furni\u00adture store\u2019s venti\u00adlation system already had a building manage\u00adment system, but the aim was to develop a time-based strategy. (Photo | ebm-papst)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This data was then used to program the \u201cSched\u00aduled Mode,\u201d in which a controller spec\u00adi\u00adfies the fan speed at certain times based on an internal schedule. Both AHU controls work in parallel to always convey 50% of the required air flow depending on time. A prereq\u00adui\u00adsite for the control system was also that the fans could commu\u00adni\u00adcate with the building manage\u00adment system. Firstly, this enables the actual savings to be checked and, secondly, the control system to be opti\u00admized. If you eval\u00aduate data, you have more reli\u00ada\u00adbility as prob\u00adlems can be iden\u00adti\u00adfied quickly and nega\u00adtive conse\u00adquences can be prevented at an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A differ\u00aden\u00adtial pres\u00adsure measure\u00adment is easy with the RadiPac, as it has a pres\u00adsure tap for connecting a differ\u00aden\u00adtial pres\u00adsure trans\u00admitter. This enables conclu\u00adsions to be drawn about the conveyed air flow, and this can be moni\u00adtored along\u00adside many other impor\u00adtant fan oper\u00adating data. This also makes it possible to deter\u00admine the savings resulting from the retrofit. In this case, an impres\u00adsive 79%. How do I approach a retrofit?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group accordion-content\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Retrofit experts provide support in recording perfor\u00admance data, work out possible concepts, and can provide a rough overview of costs.
