Light, air, water, heat and soil with plenty of nutri\u00adents \u2013 these are the ingre\u00addi\u00adents that every plant needs to grow. But for farmers, ensuring perfect condi\u00adtions at all times is a chal\u00adlenge. Some\u00adtimes there\u2019s no rain, some\u00adtimes there\u2019s not enough sunlight. Wouldn\u2019t it be great to be able to control all these factors round the clock and adapt them to the needs of the plants? In Gimje, South Korea, that\u2019s exactly what farmers can do. This is where Smart Farm Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Valley is located \u2013 a state-owned agri\u00adcul\u00adtural busi\u00adness with a lot of high-tech.<\/p>\n

Opened at the end of 2021, the Valley\u2019s main attrac\u00adtion is its modern green\u00adhouses with a total area of nine hectares. Among them are a rental green\u00adhouse, a training green\u00adhouse for aspiring farmers and a green\u00adhouse for research and devel\u00adop\u00adment. Here, agri\u00adcul\u00adtural scien\u00adtists and compa\u00adnies are working on the agri\u00adcul\u00adture of the future. They test current inno\u00adva\u00adtions in the field and collect data for in-depth analyses using the latest infor\u00adma\u00adtion and commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion tech\u00adnology (ICT). Special medi\u00adc\u00adinal plants such as traga\u00adcanth and licorice are also culti\u00advated in the green\u00adhouse.<\/p>\n

The right temper\u00ada\u00adture in the right place<\/h2>\n

Besides auto\u00admatic irri\u00adga\u00adtion and fertil\u00adiza\u00adtion systems and addi\u00adtional UV lighting, 430 fan coil units from Dowoo ENE, a Korean manu\u00adfac\u00adturer of air-condi\u00adtioning equip\u00adment, are used throughout the Valley. These units provide decen\u00adtral\u00adized temper\u00ada\u00adture control in many parts of the green\u00adhouses to promote the growth of various plant species, and are used to both heat and cool the green\u00adhouses.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, an EC axial fan from ebm-papst draws ambient air into each of the convec\u00adtors. The air then flows over a heat transfer medium, which absorbs or releases heat depending on the setting. A filter then removes dirt and fine dust before the tempered air reaches the plants via a textile hose.<\/p>\n

Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally friendly heat transfer medium<\/h2>\n

Fan coil units func\u00adtion simi\u00adlarly to conven\u00adtional air condi\u00adtioners. What makes them special, however, is that they don\u2019t use any chem\u00adical agents as a heat transfer medium. Instead, water is used, which is tempered by a heat pump. This makes the convec\u00adtors very envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally friendly. And it also means that they are easy to install, main\u00adtain and expand using a non-hazardous fluid such as water.<\/p>\n

In addi\u00adtion, Dowoo ENE has perfectly adapted its fan coil units to the require\u00adments in the green\u00adhouses. To achieve this, the company used computer simu\u00adla\u00adtions back in the Smart Farm Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Valley plan\u00adning phase to deter\u00admine what would be needed to provide uniform air condi\u00adtioning for a large area. This also led to the choice of fans from ebm-papst. After all, in addi\u00adtion to a high air volume, the main require\u00adment is compact\u00adness so that the plants still have enough space to thrive in peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
