The festive season was just around the corner and the temper\u00ada\u00adtures in Vander\u00adbi\u00adjl\u00adpark, south of Johan\u00adnes\u00adburg, made it seem like it was summer. It was bad news when the cold water system in Pick n Pay branch, one of the largest South African super\u00admarket chains, reached the end of its service life at this time: sweaty Christmas shop\u00adping trips and major conver\u00adsion measures were not an option for Pick n Pay.<\/p>\n

However, the condi\u00adtions in the oper\u00adating room did not make it easy for Douglas Scott, Mechan\u00adical Engi\u00adneer at refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and air condi\u00adtioning company HCM, to bring the system up to date with a vari\u00adable refrig\u00aderant flow: Pick n Pay wanted new, energy-saving air condi\u00adtioning and EC fan tech\u00adnology. A partic\u00adular chal\u00adlenge was that, previ\u00adously, a single large centrifugal fan sucked air in through the heat exchangers in the oper\u00adating room, supplying the existing pipe system and consuming a large amount of energy in the process.<\/p>\n

More power under the same ceiling<\/h2>\n

But replacing it was not so easy: the fan was located in the middle of the spacious room, which had a suspended ceiling. Scott explains, \u201cA typical FanGrid was ruled out because any pres\u00adsure built up in the room would simply escape through the ceiling. In addi\u00adtion, we would have had to extend the fan wall either up to the ceiling and change the ceiling design, or alter\u00adna\u00adtively build a smaller fan room and modify the existing cable system.\u201d There were no options, consid\u00adering the time-consuming conver\u00adsion measures that would disrupt busi\u00adness.<\/p>\n

But Scott had an idea: why not use the old centrifugal fan\u2019s existing housing? After all, it was already connected to the pipe system. It was big enough to fit in and offered plenty of space on the flat side walls for the ebm-papst fans\u2019 panels, which are easy to install. If a FanGrid would not work, what about a cube?!<\/p>\n

The dice are rolled<\/h2>\n

Dewald Hattingh, Sales Engi\u00adneer at ebm-papst South Africa, was on hand to imple\u00adment the ambi\u00adtious idea, \u201cWe consid\u00adered many reasons why a fan cube would not work, but, in the end, HCM and ebm-papst estab\u00adlished a theory that, as pres\u00adsure sources, the fans would generate pres\u00adsure that was turbu\u00adlent yet so high that the fans would fulfill the system\u2019s flow require\u00adments,\u201d says Hattingh.<\/p>\n

There was not much time for simu\u00adla\u00adtions, so it was impor\u00adtant to find out quickly whether the theory would work in prac\u00adtice or the nine RadiPac EC fans in the cube would work against each other. But every\u00adthing went well: the cube works perfectly.<\/p>\n

Scott sums up: \u201cThe project would not have been possible without the impec\u00adcable service from ebm-papst South Africa. The expert personnel supplied HCM with soft\u00adware and hard\u00adware and provided invalu\u00adable advice on the possible prob\u00adlems that could occur when using fans in this uncon\u00adven\u00adtional way.
