Driven by its own engine, it always keeps the goods in the trucks at the right temper\u00ada\u00adture. It offers the fastest cooling system currently avail\u00adable and oper\u00adates almost a third more effi\u00adciently than the industry average. \u201cWhen it comes to energy consump\u00adtion, nothing else on the market can compare to it,\u201d says Wayne Donnellan, senior engi\u00adneer for refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and air flow systems at Thermo King, with pride. \u201cWe have set new stan\u00addards here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a reason for that: because the air flow is gener\u00adated inde\u00adpen\u00addently of the combus\u00adtion engine, the customer can adjust the airflow of the evap\u00ado\u00adrator to suit their exact load and needs. This protects the goods and reduces costs. The Thermo King\u2019s Advancer Controller auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally adjusts the condenser fan speed depending on the cooling capacity and there\u00adfore maxi\u00admizes fuel economy. For example, if the refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion unit is not oper\u00adating at full load it auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally reduces condenser fan speed. The Advancer uses up to 30 percent less fuel than its prede\u00adcessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to energy consump\u00adtion, nothing else on the market can compare to it. Two fans are located in the evap\u00ado\u00adrator and blow cool air into the trailer, two are located in the condenser and dissi\u00adpate the heat produced by the cooling liquid to the outside. It sounds simple, but is in fact the result of many years of inten\u00adsive project work. (Photo | Thermo King)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solu\u00adtion with DC instead of AC fans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin M\u00fcnz, Head of Trans\u00adporta\u00adtion at ebm-papst, was a sub-project manager in the tech\u00adnology depart\u00adment. He explains: \u201cThermo King envis\u00adaged a simple cooling system oper\u00adated by high-voltage AC fans. However, we saw an oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to imple\u00adment an inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive, future-oriented solu\u00adtion with DC fans here. The fans are exposed to vibra\u00adtions, rapid temper\u00ada\u00adture changes and humidity on the road, meaning that lower volt\u00adages are better suited here. In addi\u00adtion, DC fans are control\u00adlable and espe\u00adcially effi\u00adcient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the team at ebm-papst devel\u00adoped an alter\u00adna\u00adtive solu\u00adtion using DC fans. They deliver a lot of power in the smallest space and save fuel thanks to reduced power consump\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the engi\u00adneers had to over\u00adcome a few hurdles during devel\u00adop\u00adment. They had the right DC fans ready: 48-volt RadiCal DC fans were a good starting point. However, the desired solu\u00adtion stip\u00adu\u00adlated an even lower power consump\u00adtion. A motor that could do this and could also with\u00adstand the road condi\u00adtions hadn\u2019t been invented yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe effi\u00adciency of RadiCal DC fans impressed us. To adapt the fans to the tight space, they had to design a smaller impeller for the fan that would do its job without losing effi\u00adciency or power. Of course, the new combi\u00adna\u00adtion of motor and impeller also put other demands on the elec\u00adtronics that control every\u00adthing. So the team adapted them for the new job. ebm-papst presented the proto\u00adtype person\u00adally at Thermo King\u2019s produc\u00adtion plant in Galway in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wayne Donnellan from Thermo King explains: \u201cThe effi\u00adciency of RadiCal DC fans impressed us. We were also pleased that the fans were very compact and light\u00adweight. This made handling them in the produc\u00adtion process easier. The noise level was another impor\u00adtant factor for us, as the newly devel\u00adoped trailer cooling system needed to be better than its prede\u00adcessor. The noise level of the RadiCal fans in the stan\u00addard product is already very low. With a Flow\u00adGrid air inlet grille, we can reduce it even further.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close part\u00adner\u00adship for devel\u00adop\u00adment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With regard to the proto\u00adtype, Thermo King still had some concerns that a few compo\u00adnents might not be robust enough. There\u00adfore, the elec\u00adtrical team at ebm-papst inte\u00adgrated protec\u00adtive circuits into the elec\u00adtronics, longer-lasting connector systems with gold-plated coat\u00adings and connector greases to make the fans even more durable and reli\u00adable. After all, reli\u00ada\u00adbility is the top priority for Thermo King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took around three years to get to the final product. Wayne sums it up: \u201cIt was a devel\u00adop\u00adment based on part\u00adner\u00adship. Whether it was the motors, the voltage, or the arrange\u00adment of the fans, we discussed every\u00adthing openly with ebm-papst. They under\u00adstood our require\u00adments and knew how to get the best out of their fans.
