A new day dawns in La D\u00e9fense. The first tired employees emerge from Line 1 of the Paris Metro, and the skyscrapers of La D\u00e9fense awaken, bright lights coming on one by one behind the glass fa\u00e7ades. But cooling tower manu\u00adfac\u00adturer Jacir has already accom\u00adplished much of his work on this January night in 2019. On Jacir\u2019s orders, heavy goods vehi\u00adcles had crawled through the empty streets in the early hours \u2013 twelve stain\u00adless steel boxes, each 7.6 to 7.7 meters, were unloaded in front of a building that resem\u00adbles an upside-down mush\u00adroom: the heart of enertherm, respon\u00adsible for all the hot and cold running water in La D\u00e9fense.<\/p>\n

enertherm is respon\u00adsible for heating the homes and work\u00adplaces of hundreds of thou\u00adsands of people to a suit\u00adable temper\u00ada\u00adture. enertherm uses a piping system to provide cold water for air condi\u00adtioning and warm water for heating directly to the build\u00adings.<\/p>\n

But first, there were prob\u00adlems to solve. The cooling towers in enertherm\u2019s produc\u00adtion plant were past their best. They are used to cool the condensers that conduct the heat from the water. enertherm had to contend with leaks, and main\u00adte\u00adnance was compli\u00adcated. And then there was the noise \u2013 the nearest resi\u00adden\u00adtial and commer\u00adcial build\u00adings are only 50 meters from the plant, which was too close for the level of noise that the old towers made.<\/p>\n

36 Custom-Made Cooling Towers<\/h2>\n

This is where Jacir really impressed. The cooling tower experts are based in Pontault-Combault in the south-east of Paris and won the tender to deliver enertherm 36 custom-made cooling towers, to be installed under the roof of the enertherm building in three stages. To Antoine Robi\u00adchon, Jacir\u2019s Tech\u00adnical Director, it is clear what made the differ\u00adence. \u201cFor enertherm, it wasn\u2019t the price that was key \u2013 as we weren\u2019t cheaper than the compe\u00adti\u00adtion \u2013 it was how quiet our product is. On paper, our strongest competitor\u2019s system was equally quiet, but ours delivers in prac\u00adtice. ebm-papst\u2019s calcu\u00adla\u00adtions proved to be absolutely correct.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you stand 20 meters away from the Jacir cooling towers, you\u2019ll be exposed to a volume of 37 dB(A). That\u2019s less than a TV in your living room playing at a normal volume. Each cooling tower contains nine fans, which generate an air flow of 270,000 m\u00b3\/h. \u201cWe chose ebm-papst\u2019s RadiPac centrifugal fans, as they were the only ones that could meet the require\u00adments,\u201d says Robi\u00adchon.<\/p>\n

Apart from the low noise level, the two main require\u00adments were energy effi\u00adciency and being wear free: The fans have a wide optimum effi\u00adciency range, with a static overall effi\u00adciency of up to 68 percent. The EC external rotor motors of the centrifugal fans with 100% speed control do not require main\u00adte\u00adnance thanks to the long-term lubri\u00adca\u00adtion of the ball bear\u00adings. With the new cooling towers, enertherm can achieve a total cooling capacity of 129 megawatts. In total, Jacir installed 324 RadiPac fans with a size of 1,000 mm in the cooling towers for enertherm.<\/p>\n

The project was divided into three deliv\u00aderies, each of twelve towers that Jacir had to install on the roof of the enertherm building at a height of five meters \u2013 which was no easy under\u00adtaking, and a real orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtional effort: \u201cThe heavy goods vehi\u00adcles were only allowed to operate at night, while the 1,000-ton crane was only able to work in the day. What\u2019s more, the crane driver couldn\u2019t see what was happening at the end of the 100-meter-long arm,\u201d Robi\u00adchon explains.<\/p>\n

But the posi\u00adtioning of the cooling towers worked out \u2013 and strength\u00adened Jacir\u2019s posi\u00adtion in the market at the same time: \u201cIt was an impor\u00adtant project for us.
