While we offered a rela\u00adtively fixed product port\u00adfolio in the past, we nowa\u00addays provide advice to our clients on specific designs, options and vari\u00ada\u00adtions, tailor-made to the appli\u00adca\u00adtion needs of our clients. We are now talking about solu\u00adtions. In order to success\u00adfully develop, sell and produce a solu\u00adtion, we obvi\u00adously need indi\u00advidual contri\u00adbu\u00adtions from different func\u00adtions, with different capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and skill sets \u2013 often coming from different loca\u00adtions. Only if these contri\u00adbu\u00adtions merge harmo\u00adniously together to one seam\u00adless value stream, a busi\u00adness can be successful. In such an intense sport, even when tech\u00adnology might seem the prime factor to success, we would not be able to win without our people. At Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motor\u00adsport, we put a lot of effort into recruiting, retaining and devel\u00adoping the vast numbers of highly intel\u00adli\u00adgent people that work at our two facto\u00adries in Brackley and Brix\u00adworth.<\/p>\n<h3>How do you manage to orga\u00adnize collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion in your teams?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Toto Wolff:<\/em> Managing a team of this size is all about effec\u00adtive commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. We can have well over one hundred people trav\u00adel\u00adling round the globe at any one time, plus nearly 1500 working away at the facto\u00adries, so you have to make sure everyone is in the loop and commu\u00adni\u00adcating with each other. It\u2019s all about commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. Effec\u00adtively leading large teams means above all to ensure commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. It starts with the staffing process in which the often referred to \u2018soft-skills\u2019 are getting higher atten\u00adtion than tech\u00adnical skills. It also means that exec\u00adu\u00adtives need to spend a substan\u00adtial amount of time to talk to their teams, to explain the goals and direc\u00adtions for each indi\u00advidual person but also for the team.<\/p>\n<p>I real\u00adized in my role that the one thing I need to do right is commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. Effec\u00adtive leaders know that they need to perma\u00adnently review frequency, style and content of their team commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion, they need coaching and prac\u00adtice. My personal \u2018contin\u00aduous improve\u00adment process\u2019, CIP, is a contin\u00aduous commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion process, CCP. From CIP to CCP so to say.<\/p>\n<h3>How do you focus many indi\u00advid\u00aduals to one goal?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Toto Wolff:<\/em> Bringing hundreds of people together to work towards one aim over a sustained period is not an easy task but we take an open and proac\u00adtive approach to manage\u00adment, with regular staff debriefs, an open door policy, empow\u00adering our people, and of course, trying to lead by example.<\/p>\n<p><em>Johannes Pfeffer:<\/em> In this context I\u2019m a bit envious at Toto. I think it\u2019s much easier for a Formula One<sup>TM<\/sup> team to define their goals. All team members under\u00adstand that there is one goal \u2013 it is simple and clear: The team wants to win the race and jump on the winner\u00b4s podium!<\/p>\n<p>In the corpo\u00adrate sector it isn\u2019t so easy and obvious to clearly define this one goal. We often limit ourselves to formu\u00adlating figures, data and facts as a goal. I frequently observed that in the commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion about targets and goals we pay too much atten\u00adtion to the company\u2019s key finan\u00adcial figures. To compare again with the Formula One<sup>TM<\/sup> world: Imagine a situ\u00ada\u00adtion where during the ongoing race, the pit crew decides to send the following message to the driver on the team radio: \u201cTeam budget exceeded by 10 %\u201d. We should set goals which create this \u2018winner feeling\u2019 for every\u00adbody involved and we have to ensure that every\u00adbody under\u00adstands and accepts them as a contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to some\u00adthing great.
