Tom Sandner has been fasci\u00adnated for a long time by the idea of also using his car as a house on wheels. At 18, just out of school, he converted his first VW bus into a camper and drove to Italy with three friends. \u201cThere\u2019s simply nothing better than tossing some clothes and a bike or skis into the car and driving off,\u201d says Sandner, who is now 35. \u201cI like being outdoors a lot and being able to decide where to go next on a whim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Sandner drives a Bresler van on a Fiat Ducato chassis and allows himself more comfort, such as a perma\u00adnently installed high roof and a heating system with hot-water boiler. They make the vehicle capable of jour\u00adneys in any weather and during all seasons. Last winter, Sandner drove to Spain and Portugal for four weeks. \u201cIn the Sierra Nevada at 2,300 meters, it can easily cool off to minus five degrees at night. Then it\u2019s impor\u00adtant for the heater to work reli\u00adably.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandner can count on that since the heater is from his employer, Truma Ger\u00e4tetechnik GmbH & Co. KG in Putzbrunn near Munich. A family busi\u00adness founded in 1949, Truma is the market leader in liquid gas heaters for recre\u00adational vehi\u00adcles. Its customers include Hymer, Deth\u00adleffs and Fendt \u2014 nearly all Euro\u00adpean motor home and camper manu\u00adfac\u00adturers. The Truma Group is also active inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adally, in Europe, China, the United \u00adStates, Australia and else\u00adwhere.<\/p>\n

Small, light\u00adweight and quiet<\/h2>\n

Truma Combi heaters warm up living areas and heat ten liters of water in a tank. One compo\u00adnent, the inte\u00adgrated blower for combus\u00adtion air, was specially devel\u00adoped by ebm-papst to meet the heater\u2019s require\u00adments. \u201cSmall, light\u00adweight and quiet were the require\u00adments,\u201d says Bern\u00adhard Schloderer, who works in inter\u00adna\u00adtional strategic purchasing. Small because there is not much space in a house on wheels. Light\u00adweight because the permis\u00adsible maximum weight of vehi\u00adcles is regu\u00adlated, and a high base weight auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally means less luggage is allowed. Quiet because the unit is often installed under a bed and should not disturb the occu\u00adpants. The result is a compact heater that is barely audible and smoothly adjustable as well.<\/p>\n

Another require\u00adment is reli\u00ada\u00adbility at extreme temper\u00ada\u00adtures. \u201cThe unit has to work safely from minus 30 to plus 70 degrees Celsius,\u201d says \u00adSchlo\u00adderer. \u201cThe blower from ebm-papst is like the Mercedes of its market, excep\u00adtion\u00adally long-lasting and reli\u00adable. That\u2019s impor\u00adtant to us. No customer would forgive us if he was in the moun\u00adtains in subfreezing temper\u00ada\u00adtures and the heater failed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hot and cold solu\u00adtions<\/h2>\n

What is true of cold is also a must for heat: a pleasant climate inside the vehicle even in the summer sun. In addi\u00adtion to the heater, which Truma is devel\u00adoping in coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with ebm-papst Lands\u00adhut, ebm-papst Mulfingen has been deliv\u00adering centrifugal fans for air condi\u00adtioners to Putzbrunn for 13 years. Truma then installs them in roof-mounted or storage compart\u00adment air condi\u00adtioning systems. Light\u00adness is crucial for these units as well. \u00adSchloderer describes working with ebm-papst as comple\u00admen\u00adtary coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion: \u201cWe find solu\u00adtions together. One can\u2019t do without the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Truma has added a special new gadget to its range, an app to control heaters and air condi\u00adtioners. A freezing or over\u00adheated camper is a poor welcome after a day spent on the slopes or the beach. Not a problem, because the temper\u00ada\u00adture can even be controlled from outside. No wonder the trend toward living in a small space, so-called tiny living, is becoming increas\u00adingly popular if it means not having to forgo comfort.<\/p>\n

Some of Tom Sandner\u2019s coworkers do not have campers of their own, but they can still expe\u00adri\u00adence some of their company\u2019s prod\u00aducts at work. Truma makes a pool of ten vehi\u00adcles avail\u00adable to its employees, who can borrow them for excur\u00adsions and vaca\u00adtions.
