However, at the hot race in Bahrain during the 2017 season, the rack came danger\u00adously close to over\u00adheating. Team supplier ebm-papst was called for help to find a solu\u00adtion. (Photo | Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motor\u00adsport)<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Air flow is key to optimal cooling<\/h2>\n<p>An initial analysis of the IT rack by the experts from ebm-papst revealed that it would be possible to make rapid improve\u00adments to the air duct design. In the existing config\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtion of the rack, the doors and side walls were not sealed. As air always takes the path of least resis\u00adtance, it was flowing out of these open\u00adings and so was not avail\u00adable for cooling the elec\u00adtronic compo\u00adnents. First of all, they grad\u00adu\u00adally replaced exisiting at the front and then at the rear of the rack with fans from ebm-papst. The partic\u00adular chal\u00adlenge here was that it was not possible to modify the instal\u00adla\u00adtion space and that ebm-papst had to work within extremely strict para\u00adme\u00adters in making the right choice. Thanks to the exten\u00adsive product port\u00adfolio of ebm-papst, however, they quickly managed to iden\u00adtify suit\u00adable fans.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: none;\">Cool over the finishing line<\/h2>\n<p>The effects of this upgrade were partic\u00adu\u00adlarly evident from the fact that the temper\u00ada\u00adture differ\u00adence between the air flowing into the rack and flowing out of it is much lower than before the conver\u00adsion. This shows that a larger volume of air is coming into contact with the hot areas in the rack, and so the equip\u00adment is being cooled more effi\u00adciently.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Harris summed up: \u201cWe have a unique require\u00adment for our trav\u00adel\u00adling server infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. We take the racks to various different parts of the world with different envi\u00adron\u00admental chal\u00adlenges. In Singa\u00adpore, it\u2019s hot and humid, while in Bahrain it\u2019s hot and dry, and it\u2019s cold and can even snow at the tests in Barcelona.
