In a retired fallout shelter called Pionen, the data center oper\u00adator BAHNHOF stores its customers\u2019 data behind steel doors 50 centime\u00adters thick. Extra protec\u00adtion is provided by surveil\u00adlance cameras and a secu\u00adrity service.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Data Center meets James Bond film<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It is no acci\u00addent that the room looks a bit like a scene from a James Bond film; the oper\u00ada\u00adtors got inspi\u00adra\u00adtion from the legendary series of films when designing the inte\u00adrior of the data center. But for a long time, the air condi\u00adtioning system was not a good fit with the operator\u2019s high-tech philos\u00adophy as its CRAC units used inef\u00adfi\u00adcient, belt-driven fans. \u201cA major disad\u00advan\u00adtage of belt drive is that the fans emit dirt parti\u00adcles, and that\u2019s the last thing we need here,\u201d says Kris\u00adtian Thorin, project manager at BAHNHOF. \u201cSure, filters solve some of the prob\u00adlems, but there are still dirt parti\u00adcles in the server area. Besides, we had to do frequent main\u00adte\u00adnance, including the replace\u00adment of belts and filters. So we were looking for other solu\u00adtions that would also allow us to save on energy costs. The plan included bringing the air condi\u00adtioning system up to a level to match the repu\u00adta\u00adtion of Sweden\u2019s coolest data center by installing EC fans, which feature espe\u00adcially high effi\u00adciency and easy control, to replace the belt-driven fans.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">We don\u2019t need any more filters and have been able to reduce the required fan pres\u00adsure. That lowers our energy consump\u00adtion even further.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><cite><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kris\u00adtian Thorin, project manager at BAHNHOF<\/span><\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Once the plan was in place, a contractor carried out the upgrade and replaced all of the old fans with EC fans. \u201cThe upgrade went smoothly,\u201d says Kris\u00adtian Thorin. \u201cAlong with very high energy savings, we also solved the problem with the dirt parti\u00adcles. Now we don\u2019t need any more filters and have been able to reduce the required fan pres\u00adsure. That lowers our energy consump\u00adtion even further.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">275 megawatts saved<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">All told, the upgrade saves BAHNHOF 275 megawatt-hours of energy each year, and it spends about 40,000 euros less on its annual elec\u00adtricity bill. The company oper\u00adates its data center even more effi\u00adciently now that the waste heat from the servers is also put to good use. In the past, it was simply vented to the surface, but in a joint project with a district heating supplier, BAHNHOF installed two heat pumps in Pionen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The upgrade saves BAHNHOF 275 megawatt-hours of energy each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"prcoFlietext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">They route the waste air from the servers to a 70-meter pipe that is connected to the district heating network\u2019s main pipeline.
